The leadinr , stock operator attacked gold
,o-day rigorously, and one time brought
down the premium to 145; the supposition
was that the market would yield to-day to
144, on the large number of short sales
early yesterday, and last. night but the
bull party took all that was offered and the
masket reacted; towards the close the mar
ket again became weak, and closed at
145%. The commercial interests of the
- country favor the party, but the excite
ment in politics and the constantly setting
afloat rumors of war in Europe keeps the
gold room and a large number of outside
speculators disposed to buy, or at least,
hold gold, a rally is likely to take place at
the close of the week.
'Government bonds, although very - low,
and above average prices of last February,
have been bought in limited amounts by
Gearnan - houses, but for what purpose is
not known—the feeling is yet bearish.
The stock market seems to have touched
bottom in Erie and New York Central,
and the next few days may witness a sharp
rally in these stocks, but the balance of
the list is yet too high in anticipation of a
tight money market. The bear element
was not strong enough to break the entire '
market but the next attempt can hardly
fail to dO so. •
The report circulated in Wall street, that
thereVas an over issue of Cleveland and
Pittsburgh stock Is proved to be false, and
the long promised rise is likely to: take
place within the next few dm.
The New York Stock quotations to-day,
as received by Mr. Ph. R. .Mertz, were as
follows: Gold 145%; 188I's, 113%; 5-20's,
1862, 113; do 1864, 108 y. do 1865, 111; do
new, 107%; do 1867; 81907%; /0-40's, 108;
Cleveland & Pittsburgh 85%; Fort Wayne,
105; Western Union Telegraph', 33%;
Adams Express, 47X; Erie, 52%.
—The New York Tribune, of Tuesday, in
commenting on the recent advance in gold,
remarks: The speculation for an advance
in gold halts. The heavy shipments of
bonds and the large amount of produce now
going forward has reduced our - balance of
indebtedness on the other side to a nomi
nal amount. and the heavy amount of cer
eals yet•to be chipped will bring the bal
ance of tradeln our favor before the season
closes: The commercial value of gold is"
not. rated 'above , 125 by - careful business
men, and the present exorbitant premium
- is only maintained by the the distrust of
Democratic pbliey, Should it gain control of
the Government, and by the reiterated
statements of the disturbed condition of
the Southern States. This is being con
stantly magnified by operators, and is the
main stay of the bulls in , gold. That the
rebel feeling is greatly excited by the
hopes held oat by the Northern wing ofthe
Party is undoubted, but no sane man
doubts that, on the election of Grant, it
will immediately cease, and affairs return
to their normal condition. With our su
perabundant crops, and the good demand
that we shall have for them abroad, it will
be impassible to maintain gold at the pres
ent figures, and could short sales be
stopped it would sink quickly to its com
mercial value.
We also clip the following from the
same paper: Money opened with a firmer
feeling and a number of banks advanced to
4 per cent. on call; at this rate Government
dealers were accommodated. The rate on
miscellaneous securities continues at 4 to 5
per. cent. with more done at the highest
rate. Some of the 3 per cent. Certificates
are finding their way to the Sub-Treasury
for payment from parties who need the
currency, as they cannot be sold at better
than par and accrued interest. About
$11,000,000 of, the maturing compounds
have been converted into certificates. Tho
country banks now sending them in desire
their payment. As the certificates aro
payable on demand they supposed that the
Sub-Treasurer would also pay the com
pounds in the same manner.. This, how
ever, he declined to' do, saying that they
must be sent to Washington; so the banks
take the certificates, and then go to the
cashier anti demand the greenbacks, which
aro then paid. As it now stands, it only
causes a temporary delay; but it is a nice
specimen of the red-tape operations of the
Treasury. The Secretary of the Treasury
desires to get al the compounds converted
into certificates, l
but . the banks of this city
already have as many in hand as they can
safely carry, and' Aro not purchasers, 'and
estimate that some 820,00000 will come to
bo paid off during the autumn. The ship
ment of currency west continues active,
and the bunks to-day shipped lame
amounts.

Business generally seems to be looking
up somewhat though there is still plenty
of room for improvement. We can report
a fair local demand for all of the leading
commodities, and for some articles, there
seems 'to be a speculative movement,
though as yet the speculative feeling in
this market is not very strong, -
GROCERIES—There has been more ea- .
tively manifested in the grocery Jrarket
this week, and prices for some articles are
higher. Syrups are up frilly five cents per
gallon, and Teas have advanced about ten
cents per pound with every appearance of
a still further advanCe. Coffees area shade
easier,, under the influence of the decline
in gold, though not quotably lower. Su
gars are dull In consequence of a partial
failure of small fruit - crops; and the de
mand is not near as large as expected.

out of this market, on private terms. Rye
is in light supply, and the receipts are in
significant; dealers are paying $1,30

$1,35. Ear Coin* is scarce and in demand; _

mixed to prime 'Yellow. New. Oats con
tinue to amvelreely, with a supply in ex

CRUDE—The Crude 'market, :although
more active, continues unsettled and
panicky, and both buyers and sellers are
very chary in their operations. The
former seem inclined to operate on a basis
of lower prices in the' immediate future,
while the latter, although more disposed to
sell than they wero a few days since, thus
far, are unwilling to n!ake concessions in
order to effect sales. The sales were: 1,000
,
bids for immediate deli Very at 13 % o; 600 do
at 13,%e; 1,000 each for October and Novem
ber at 13;c; 1,000 for Deceinber at 13c, and ,
2;000 bbls. in two lots of 1,000 bbls each, at
at 8,15, delivered on cars at Venango city.
Later in the the day, there were offers to
sell at 85,10, and towards evening, it was
thought that .a plininp offer of 5 would
have been sufficient.
REFINED—The market for Refined is
also weak and panicky, and while the
.sales, in the aggregate, were considerably
larger than' for several days, prices are
without important change. Sale of 1,000
for September and October at 333,c; 500
each same months at 34c; 1,500 in lots, for
last half of August at 33c, and 2,000 do at
323.1 c. Later in the day it was thought
August could have been boughtet 3234 c,
showing a decline of half a cent during the.
day. It is said that there are but very few
good buyers at present prices, and this, _
more than anything else, tends to retard
business; our refiners are. becoming very
cautious in this respect, and instead of
selling to anybody, as has been the ease
heretofore, they inquire very closely into
the standing and antecedents of the buyer.
