M. apO:oM —Tho New York Post of Saturday evon big, commenting on the eventful week in gold premiums, says: "Commercial considerations which would of themselves have caussd a gradual and steady advance in the gold premium have been pressed into the service of the specu lators, and we have seen instead rapid and violent fluctuations, apparently dictated by the momentary interests of heavy opera tors. The prevailing idea seems to be that in view of the unfavorable conaition of our foreign trade balance, a higher premium will be maintained before October than has been reached during the past week." —Closing quotations received by James T. • Brady & Co.: 5Z21 Gold, 146%; U. 8. 6's, 1881's, 115%; 5-20's, 1862,,114•%; 5.20'5, 1864, 110%; 5-20's, 1865, 112; 10's, 109%; 5-20's, January and July, '65, 109%; 5-20's, January and July, 67 109%; '6B, 109%; June 7-30%, par less !,‘ July 7-30'a. do % August 118%; Sept. 1181, Oct. 118; Union Pacific Railroad, 102; _Cen tral 103. There Is but little that Is really now or important to be said about the general markets, and general business • continues dull. Onoe It has been fully ascertained in regardto the resnits of the harvest, and the crops begin to move, business will im prove, andAho indications now are very favorable for a good fail trade. We look for a good demand for all kinds of Pitts burgh manufactures this fall, and nothing contribiites so much to, the strength of Pittsburgh as when her manufacturing in terests are in good condition. GROCERIES—The grocery' market has been fairly active during the. past week, there having been fair volume of business in the aggregate, while so far as prices are concerned, there are no changes worthy of special notice. Raw Sugars are in good de mand and firm, while Refined is a little. weak and a shade lower. Coffee is firmer but unchanged, and this is trite of Rice, Fish, Soap, Candles, etc; etc. The following are the ruling quotations: StleAus—Cuba, 12340 for 140 good grocery 12% to 13c f and for choice; Porto Rico—good or , 130; ; prime, 13,14; choice,• 14M to 15c; Clarified Cuba, 14 to 1434 c. OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE, t WEDNESDAY, August 12, IS6B. The local money market is quiet and de void of any new or important characteristics worthy of special notice. As general busi ness is dull the demand for money is 'by no means urgent, and all good borrowers ex perience no difficulty in getting accommo dations at 8 to 9 per cent. in bank, and some, who keep up big balances, get it for less. On the street the figures range all the way from 10 to 15 per cent., according to circumstances. —The New Stock quotations to-day as received byMr. Ph. R. Mertz, were as follows: Gold 146%; 1881's, 115%; 5-20's, 1852, 114%; do 1864, 110%; do 1865, 112 y,; do new, 109; do 1867, -109 w; 10-40's, 109%; Cleveland ,St Pittsburgh 87;; Fort Wayne, 108%; Western Union Telegraph 33%; Adams Express, 52; Erie, 57%. —The decline in Gold which began on Friday in New York, and has continued; with some halts since, is attributed mainly to the statement of the public debt, Which showed a much larger balance of coin in the Treasury than was I expected, The New York T1171C3 of the Bth says: "The speculators for the rise in gold have evidently underrated the amount re• maining in the Treasury. The public debt statement this afternoon shows that eighty- three million of dollars were on hand at the close of August." The balance of coin however, is not near so large as was at first supposed; - from the 883,409,917 are to be deducted $ 22 ,414,000 of go certificates, leaving the balance in the ownership of the government on August Ist 860,995,217. This sum included the 87,- 200,000 for Alaska, of which $2,000,000 . has been drawn out. PITTSBURGH MARKETS. OFFICR OF TEEPITTSBURGEI GAZETTE, WEDNESDAY, AuguAt 12, 1868. $18,00; NO. 3, $13,50; in half barrels, 500 more. BUTTER—Under the influence of in creased receipts the market is a little dull, and prices are barely maintained, ranging from 30 to 33 for good to prime. EGGS—Continue exceedinglg dull, with a supply largely in excess of the demand, and we now quote at 16 to 18. CHEESE—Is quiet and unchanged at 14 to 15 for Western Reserve and Hamburg 16 to 17 for Factory; and 11.1 to 20 for Sweitzer. HAY—Is selling from country wagons at $2O to $2B, for common to prime new crop. GRAIN—While the dealers are 'getting in but little Wheat the mills seem to be receiving plenty. and we continue to quote, at $2,12 to 12,15 for Red and 5'2,20 to 12,2.5 for White. The reason why dealers . do not bring in more lies in the fact that there is no margin, as the mills can bring it here as cheap as the dealers.. The stock of old Oats is almost completely exhausted, while the new crop has hardly as Vet been thrown upon the market; we can report sales of old at 82 and new at 69 to 70: Sale of 1 car prime shelled Corn at $1,12 and this may be regarded as the ruling price: for prime It is difficult to quote either Rye or Barley, as thus far we have heard of no sales whatee or of the latter, and but very few of the former. ' GREEN APPLES—Are Coining in more freely, and the market is a little weak with a drooping tendency; sales at 13,50 to $5,50 per bbl, as to quality. POTATOES—Continue exceedingly dull, beingotlered at 0013,25 per bbl., without finding very many buyers. LARD OIL—Is firm but unchanged at $1,15 for No. 2 and $1,45 for No.' 1. . PROVISIONS—Bacon is firm but rm-; changed at 13N to 14 for Shoulders; 1634 ta, 18y4 for Ribbed and Clear Sides; and 22;4' to 22v, for Sugar Cured Hams. Lard 19M Dried Beef; 21%. Mess Pork 00. FLOUR—There is no improvement to note in the demand, and while the market is rather dull, prices are without quotable change; we quote at $10,50 to 111,for Spring Wheat; $10,75 to $L1,50 for Winter Wheat, and 0,25 to $9,50 foe fancy brands. 1 PITTSBURGH PETROLEUM MARKET. OFFICE OF THE PITTRUEGH GAZETTEE, WEDNESDAY, AUgUSt 12; 1868. CRUDE, , • • The crude market was a little panicky to-day, and in the afternoon concessions had to be made in order to effect Bales. Spot, which was held at 14c yesterday, was offered to-day at 13%c with 1334 c bid; sales of 1,000 bbls for September, seller's option, at 14; and 1,000 tbbls, each for October and November, at 1334 c. There were variotus causes assigned for the Hurry to-day; one that it was a bear movement, while another had it that it was the increased production —it is alleged that there has .been an in crease of seven hundred barrels within the past week or ten days, and that the yield in the Venaugo region is now fully twelve thousand barrels per day. Be this as it may, there is no disputing the fact that the market was decidedly offish to-day,, and that compared with yesterday, prices ruled lower. REFINED—There was also considerable of a panic in refined oil to-day, under the influence of adverse reports from the East, and particularly was this the ease in re gard to early deliveries. We can report 500 bbls spot at 3334 c; 1,000 do at 33%c, and 1,000 do for the last half of September at 2114 e. Late in the day it was reported that sales were Made in New York for August at 32 to 32c, but some parties received these reports with considerable allowance, though we understood that telegrams *ore received which reported sales or offers to sell at these figures. LATER—Since the above wag written, we are reported the following bulk Oil sales 5,000 barrels delivered at Saw Mill Run. immediately, at Isc. .Sales of 2,000 barrels on the Spot at 133 c; 060 barrels do. at 1330 per gallon.
