RIVER NEWS.
- The river has undergone no change since
the date of our last report, the metal mark
indicating two feet one inch. It is claimed,
however, that there are several inches more
water in the channel than the mark shows,
and we are inclined to believe it, as the
Camelia went out drawing thirty inches.
We feel satisfied that Captain Dean'would
not have loaded her down to'that if he had
not felt pretty certain of getting .throngh.
Now, if this mark is not correct, it is some
body's business to have it corrected, as
there is no other mark to go by when the
river, gets down to a low water stage.
—The Kate Robinson has been laid up at
nincinnati for the present.
—lt was the Hattie not the Mollie Burris
that snagged and sunk near Cairo the other
day.
•—The Maggie Hays will load for New
Orleans at Chgeinnati, after the Emma
No. 3.
--The towboat Samson passed by Cincin
nati on Monday evening, with eight barges
loaded with empty oil barrels from Aurora.
—The steamer Veteran was sold on the
Ist inst.,
at Gallipolis, by Deputy U. S.
Marshal J. E. Richardson, for the sum of
81,251. Messrs. Clarence Ward, Lewis Bil
lings. sen., and Win. -Billings were the
purchasers.
The Cincinnati Enquirer of Tuesday says:
Captain George Neeld, agent of the Pitts
burgh Underwriters, is in the city, on busi
ness relative to the insurance on the steam
ers Ezra Porter and Delaware. burned here
-a few days since. Capt. Reinhart, of Pitts
burgh, principal owner of the Delewure,
and Captain Richard Calhoun aro also in
the city.
—The St. Louis Republican of Sunday
says: The statement which appeared in
the Democrat yesterday morning, in regard
to Capt. IV:J. Kountz, going on the Great
Republic, was entirely premature;
as - was also that to the effect
that Capt. Pat. Yore would command
her. The owners of the boat have not de
termined who they will place in charge.
—Capt. W. Holliday, an old Upper Mis
sissippi Pilot, died at his residence in Keo
kuk on Saturday last. Capt. Holiday was
abotit 51 or. 52 years of age, and had been
on the river as Captain and pilot fcir'3l.
yeah. .He commenced his career as a keel
boatman, when very young, and during an
active life was universally respected. His
death will be regretted among a wide circle
of associates and friends.
—The Dubuque. Herald of the 7th oon
tains the following account of the sinking
of the War Eagle: The White Collar Line
has met with another misfortnne. The
~War Eagle struck a snag five miles below
Sabula yesterday morning and sunk, as
will be seen by a notice elsewhere. The
company has plenty of spare boats to keep
the line frill, and will start out the Damsel
this morning for up river, with the crew of
the War Eagle. A pump has been shipped
from Lacrosse to raise the sunken vessel
which feat will be accomplished in a few
days.

—The Nashville Union and Dispatch, i of
Saturday, says: A gentleman who arrived
from Wilson county, yesterday, telli us of
the sudden death by suffocation, on Sun
day .night last, of Captain Wood, an old
Cumberland.river steamboattnan, who ran
the Western waters years ago. He was
living upon his farm near Commerce, a
little post village some twelve miles north
east of Lebanon, and oft tlmnight of his
death had retired to his bed, about the
hour of ' ten, in apparent 'good. health.
About midnight, his wife was awakened
by some unnatural, noise, and upon in
quiring of her husband what was the mat
ter, received an answer that he was "suffo
cating." Ile arose and went to the door
for fresh air, and as he opened it, fell a
Lifeless corpse across the step.

Monday to the Cincinnati Commercial saym:
River receding six feet two inches water in
canal, 50 in. pass down falls end 40 _inches
over the rocks. The huge Thompson Dean,
in chargo of Pilot Pink Vurble, decended
the falls at 1 Y. M. all right, and was safely
landed at Portland; her bottom was too
wide for the chute and she way listed so
that one knuckle was in the pass and the
other rubbed over along. the edge, as abe
was actually, drawing more water than was
on the falls over the rocks. The feat - was
extremely. difficult, but was successfully
accomplished. The tow-boats, Simpson
Horner and Alps were brought up the falls
