and struck a snag, or wreck, at Head Bird's
Bend, four miles above Cario Point, caus
ing her to sink in two minutes, in „about
fifteen feet water.. She was kept off the
bottom, however, by the snag upon which
,she had run, until it rested nearly under
her boilers, and the water, this morning
was only eight feet over her main deck
aft, and eight feet forward. iAs her cargo
consists principally of 1,400 bbl cement, she
has been slowly settling, and fears are en
tertained that she will break in two and
prove a total loss. The wrecking-boat

had been knocked, or jumped overboard
when the boat sunk, and while the enginear
swam ashore to Cairo, the watchman not
being a good swimmer clung to a fender,
which he could not force to the shore until
he drifted ten miles below on the Missouri
shore. 'He then ,walked balk across the
bend to the boat, and was hailed as one res
cued from the grave. The engineer arrived
about the same time, from the opposito
shore. Capt. McComas had his family on
board. A German woman, a deck passen
ger with two children, could not under
stand English, and could not be made to
understand the nature of the accident.
A negro deck hand attempteetb rescue
her and children to upper deck, but she
broke from him three times, pulling the
children with her down - the ladder. A
large hole was at length cut in the cabin
floor, and the woman• and children drawn
up with ropes, after the boat had sunk and
the woman was floating in the water. A
portion of the cement %was for Cape Gear
deaw and Chester, and7oo bbls for Bissell's
