United States , next fail, and whom many excellent musi- 1 cal critics_have unhesitatingly pronounced fully equal to Jenny Lind, is ,of very hums ble descent. and 31. 31ahalin draws in his . spicyp work ""Les Pities aetr ices de, Parii." the, : following interesting sketch of her past life ' , "It is snowing. The: skies, all black as they are with night and cold, commence turning gray inthe east. Atter awhile the..- gun rises in the mist. i ts vague bluish light seems to"descends with the snow-flakes. Here and there, pines and birches,, covered with icicles, 'tremble anti moan in the wind. )lit a sort 'of ravine are to lie seen a few ' wretched cabins; front the snow-clad robfs, made of hark, ascend blue clouds of smoke; those who look out of the low windows of those cabins 'behold a flock-of ravens on the dazzling white plain. • "We are far from I'aris, fifty leagues from Stockholm, in a miserable village of the province of Smaland. "Lit us enter one of those hovels, which' seem to , ha -e been made rather for wild boars than for men. I ; . - " The Poor people here live in the same room with their cattle. 'A miserable stove emits painful sounds, in the middle of the floor. On the ground, in a motley group, lie goats,, sheep and children, stretching their necks wistfully, toward the kettle on the hearth. These chililren - are dressed in rags. Under a windo\ in the roof sits the mother spinning. The father, smoking a pipe, sits in a corner of the room. Every now and then are heard from without the . merry sounds of jingling sleigh-bells, or the dull noise of, a horse galloping past; a sleigh darts 1 past with lightning speed.- In the same inanner there appears and disap pears a fur cap, fur robe, a fur jacket; then the father's voice drowns the noise of the spinningtwheel, the seething kettle on the hearth, and the hissing green wood in the stove. ' ' ' "Christina!" The art.of cutting :cau4cos is,a species 'of j Sculpturerrather—than—eng"raving. There . 1 are two kinds of cameos; one of which is "of dlfferent colored strata, so that the raised tigure is of a different color from the ground; the other is of the coach-sheli. The shells t are sawed into squares *with saws of ' soft 1 ' iron, the to those used by_ sculptors. 1 After the shells are cut up into suitable ' pieces they are ground on a stone to their ' required shapes, by grinding them nicely on the edges and leaving them thick in the middle. . After this they must be cemented on a stick about 6 or 7 inches long, with 1 cement of Burgundy pitch and rosin .of 1 equal parts heated together until they are I• perfectly amalgamated. The end of the I stick isimmeried in the cement while it is ;I warm, and enough attaches itself to it to Ifasted the shell, Which must also be slightly warmed or the two will 11(4, be. attached. 1 After being cool . tlie shell is ready for cut- ting. To produce a likeness of an. object, the _ . . best way is to cut' the profile onpaper, lay it on the shell and trace it ; out. The best gravers, the harder the better, are alone fit for the work, and they are ground down to different -shaped, I 'points, some diamond, some oval, somechisel shaped and some round.L After the likeness or desi g n is tracedon the shell it has to be blocked out with'llie hand, or;it might be done by trite drills in a lathe. The blocking out-is done by tracing the disi,gn with the 'diamond pointed graver, and leaving the pencilings distinct and cutting away all the outside with chisels and gouges, taking care to leave the groundwork thick enough to finish up. After the blocking out is completed, be gin With the top of the profession in making the'heacl, by lea.ving - a space for' the hair a little raised and then engraving the features, taking great pains not to do too much at a cut, for if once spoiled there ;s no remedy. The, neck and breast are done next,. as captiously as the face. The hair is done lait, and is the iimardifficult part to 'perforrk, although the uninitiated would think it the Simplest, but it is the most difficult work of all, for no matter how good the rest of the work may be, if the hair is poorly executed, j the whole figureiooks bad. In cutting thei hair it must be gracefully curled with deli-; 6ate'eurves.- Sculptured heads arc the best! models for the learner to study. After the figure or design is, finished with the graver, the' cameo, is polished with pu,l mice stone as smooth as, possible, until all the marks of the graver disappear. It. is then finished with a stiff tooth brush and potter's clay, or Whiting and water, and af terward washed in pure water, when it, will be observed to have that-beautiful polish [for which cameos are so • justly ,admired and which made them, on account 'of th9ir chasteness of coloring, a very popular branch of jewelry. . - • ; To take the cameo off the stick after :ftlis finished, it is necessary to heat the sticleOv ; er a spirit'lamp until the cement warms, When it is ready for framing__ j The Nelson Ledges. , In going from Garretsville Ohio, to ,he.
