tage of it. This is much better than,feed
' ing off the secohd - growth of the mowing
lots. The Bass in the pastures. even if not
short; is less - Aticculenti and juicy, and will
yield less dlk than l it Ind in June, and
there is no better sqbstitute, nor one morel
easily obtal ed than corn; the use of which
foifodder is extending, even in the West, II
where we see by our exchanges, that the
cultivation of it is, recommended.
The'• grain is mostly secured, and the'
crops generally throughout the country have
been bountiful. But the farmer's work is
not done, for:as he works not only for the
... present, but fot the future, he must not only
secure the

have reference to the future:
This is the best - method for ditch ing,the
low lands, as they are comparatively' free
from water, and far laying drains where.
they are needed; also for throwing out a
supply of muck for compost during the
coming winter—thus manalf so as_to kill,
two birds with , one stone. :Use; the muck
froin the ditches for the compost heap, and
thus avoid the old ditch banks that 'used, in
former times, to disfigure the meadottra.
The hay of the wet meadows bait been
less valued of late years, especially bY the
milk farmers, than formerly, and conse
quently the meadows have been neglected.
But such hay is - valuable, if cut hi season,
for young stock, and for dry stock, and is a
resource when English hay is short.. By
proper ditching, much of may be. greatly
improved in quality. No prudent fainter
will neglect his meadow lands.
But:whether the muck is obtained - from
ditches or not, see that a good supply is
thrown out, and placed in such `a position
as to be easy of access at all seasons. There
is nothing that will add so much,' and at so
cheap a rate, to the compost heap—and that
is so valuable to our: old and sandy soils.
Nature has made wonderful provision for
the wants of man,'-which.he will gradually
learn to avail himielf of. She has storedup
in the earth the carbon extracted from the
atmosphere by vegetation in ages before
man existed on earth, that he may now have
a supply of fuel; ,and she is collecting the
carbon extracted in modern times, in the
. shape of peat and muck, that, he may have
the means of increasing and continuing the
fertility of the soil, to supply the demands
of an increasing population. .
August is the best time to cut the bushes
in the pastures, and many of our old pas
tures Badly need the bush scythe.
Weeds continue to grow, and the turnips
and beets and 7rrots and late pqtatoes must
not be neglected. - The cultivator - end hoe
must be kept moving. Weeds allowed to
..
go to seed will not only injure the present
crop, but make work for next year..
Preparation must also be made, this month
for fall seeding to grass. We like to get in
the seed about the last of the month, that it
- may get ' well - rooted before the ground
. freezes. Plow the• sod eight or nine inches
deep, dram with compost, and harrow it
in thoroughly, then sow the seed, and har
row again, and roll, and yon will not fail to
ret a good catch. Tins, practice is becom
ing very general, and when done seasonably
and thoroughly, it is foind to be the best
way. -
-. Most of the operatione to which we have
:'referred above.have reference to the future.
~ The fitimer must be a man of forecast. To
day is all he can 'call his own, and to-day
he must work for tO-motrow, for next year,
for all'eoming time—and for eternity, too.

. • 'Gathering Fruit.
The appearance and value of fruit depend
very much upon when and pow it. is gath
ered. Strawberries, if picked carefully with
half or quarter of an inch of `the stem
attached to each berry,:and laid carefully
into the, basket„ . will carry better, and sell
..- for a greater price than when. pulled hap
hazard—some with hdlls and stems on and
some with them off. Again if they are
- gathered •when they are perfectly ihy; they
will keep longer and retain

than If gathered while wet. A little water
not only hastens--decay, but= it: de
stroys the flavor of many delicate, soft va
rietles. After being•gathered, they:should
never be alloied to stand out exposed to
the sun as with many varieties it takes but
- - a little while of expostre to a hot, clear 'sun

Currants
Cunants should also be gathered with
their stems;` they "should elsobe iffy? and all
leaves thrown out. Gooseberries, if for .1

careful expulifon of all leaves will cause
them always• to command the best ',price.
Like the strawberries, care should always
be taken not to expose the m io , a-het sun
-, after gathering, for such - exposure "ken
gives the appearance of beirg -half cooked.
Raspberries and blackberrieS are too often
seen in market 'andon the table half broken
and mashed. None- but whole and perfect
• berries should ever go into the box or bas
ket for market. -It:pays to carefully assort
them before =sending to market, for the
• mingling of . a few bruised or mashed berries
,induces decay and detracts ' from their value;
' lii the judgment of the' dearer. ' " ' .
Cherries should never be gathered when,
otherwise than perfectly 'dry. We have
known them to decay entirely in twenty
' four hours when gathered while wet. It
pays also with Cherries for market 'to care
fully sort them over on a table, picking out
any mashed or wormy or imperfect fruit be
' fore sending to market Of' - course'the
i 4tems,are, or always should be, attached, al
though we have occasionally seen 'them_ In
market looking more like round 'cranberries
than cherries. .
Peaches should be left on the;trees until
'- fatly ripe, and then gathered carefully with'
thumb and finger and at once laid into the
basket or box in which they are to be mit
' keted. If the bloom is rubbed off the peach,
by rough handling, its beauty of 'appearance
;is Injured, and it will decay much sooner
than if untouched. Formerly it was suP
. posed that the peach must - be . gathered be
fore ilpe - in order " to - shill it any distance;
'but practical experience has proven that ripe
fruit, not, vita soft, will cap,- juatios,.well

Hunting far the Cows.
Many of • our farmers have wasted years of
valuable ume jut because they did not teach
their cows to wine home at night. Any
one who has eVer lived or traveled in the
country will remember the familiar Co-boa,
Co-bos, of thefarmer's son, or hired man, -
as they endeavor to coax the edws diem the
woods or the tall grass in the great pastures.'
We have had alittle experience in these
- matters, and well remember . how =thy .
-times we have waded through the brush and
bog looking for the cows, and, boy-like we:
thought them dreadful contrary ani mals. .
Bat we have lived long enough to learn
better, :and now think that the biped' was
the ,- more contrary animal 'of - the two.-
Boys, we will tell yon a secret that will save ,
you a.great deal of trouble, and it is this :
Just sow a few rows of core in drills, where
it will be handy to the mliktng place, and
every time the cows are driven up at night,
or in the morning, give each one's good
asinful of the fresh cornstalks, and ; m word
for it; the:cows will always be on hand at
milking time. -Besides this, they will give.
more milk, and forgot to kick over the- milk
pail, 'even if you do whistle a little too loud.
