AUGUST-4 c _,lBflB The Monongahela River very unexpect edly commenced to rise on Sunday night, h it% continued steadily all day yesterday, aid last evening the pier marks indicated nine feet two inches and still rising slowly. It was reported falling above, however, and we may expect to see it receding here to-day. The weather-continnes cloudy and unsettled with 'every appearance of more rain. Considerable rain fell early on Mon-, day morning. The rise was so sudden and unlOoked for that our stearnboat men were completely taken by surprise, and, as a. consequence there are quite a number of boats that will hardly be able to get out from the fact that they are undergOing repairs. The towboat men were busily engaged in getting both tows and boats in readiness, and it is probable that a large number of boats with tows of "Black-Diamonds" will get out to-day. One or two it is thought would get off last night, but the great majority of them could not possibly get ready before to-day. The Kate Robinson, in command of Capt. Marsh Hays, is announced to leave for Cincinnati and Louisville to-day with out fail, and passengers, and shippers should bear this in mind. The Bellevernon, Capt. J. J. Darragh, Jr., is announced to leave for St. Louis and all intermediate points to-day without fail. Capt. Darragh says, he is determined to go, so that passengers and shippers need, not be uneasy on this score. The towboat Alonitor with her keelboat arrived from Parkersburg on Sunday with a fair trip. It is not likely that the Pitts burgh and Parkersburg packets, Bayard and Eagle, will venture out on this rise, as it is believed that it will be of short dura tion. Thr iere is no rise in the Allegheny, a tele gram from Oil City reporting but nineteen inches and falling. •A. private telegram from Burning Springs, Virginia, reports some oil boats as having left there yesterday for Pittsburgh, drawing four and a half feet of water. Capt. Hugh Campbell left Cincinnati for Coal Port on Saturday to look after the Mary Davage. The steamer B. L. Hodge was sold by the United States Marshal at New Orleans, on Tuesday, to Mr. E. Conery, for *21,150. —The following boats are laid up at New Albany, nearly all of them undergoing thorough repairs; ,John Kilgour,P. W. Strader,Cora S., W. F. Curtiss Dick Ful! ton; Sirson 'Horner, Alps; Comet,: Swal low, Grand Lake, and Phil. Sheriden. —The ) Louisville. Courier of Saturday says: The Ida Reese, which boat grounded on Portland bar Thursday, backed out yes terday, and concluded to double •trip it. She got ovpr all right - the first, but struck on the second trip, and was still there at last accounts. • —A St. Louis telegram under date of Fri day says: The Quincy Packet and North western Union Packet Companies were to day consolidated into the Northwestern Union Packet Company, the Quincy Pack et Company. furnishing the following boats: Tom. Jasper, Mollie IdePike and Victor. —The Meniphis Avalanche; mentioning the arrival of the Emma No. 3 from New Orleans, bound for Cincinnati, recklessly makes the assertion that " the clerk, who is probably one of the meanest men in Christendom, made himself scarce, and hid until the boat backed out, to keep from paying the warfage. —Up to ten o'clock Wednesday last the Tennessee river had risen ten feet, and was still swelling, at the rate of half an inch per hour. Fears were entertained that the fine crops and the creek bottoms would be overflowed and badly damaged. The rains of the previous Saturday and Sunday nights were among the heaviest ever known in that region. —The Cincinnati Commercialof Saturday says: Capt. Tames H. Peppers "new, large and magnificent steamer, Thompson Dean, raised steam yesterday, and made a short trial trip up and down the river. Every thing worked as well as could be expected, and from the manner in which she sailed, past the wharf, we feel confident that she will prove to be a "lightning" packet. She went down mi far as Sedarnsville, where sh owill remain for some time in order to have the• finishing touches put on her. —We clip the following from the St. Louis Democrat of Saturday:. Captain Charles Beer is stopping at the Everett House in this city, He bropght the steamer Natrona from Pittsburgh, up 'White river, into Black river, and onward and up that stream to Poplar Bluffs, in the heart of Butler County, Missouri. The owners of the boat hat e. contracted to clear out the obstructions.from Black river, from Bonier Bluffs to the State line, so as to secure bet ter steamboat navigatien. : —Captain John A. Williams has a similar contract, and was engaged with a little steamer on ;Blackriver at the breaking out of the War. We have heard it said that Williams was so delighted with the coun-,. try that he secured some thousands of acres, to which. he will retire when he ban nuttiest competence on the 'river. However that may. be,' Captain .Beer.inispected the country and bought two tracts iii ; Butler= and adjoining county, and was astonished to find what an immense amount of magni ficent land could be purchased Airs trifling sum. ' ' --The St. Louis .Republican of Saturday says: The presence, in this city, for some days past, of Capt. Wm, P. Davidson and ~Mr. Wm. - Rhodes, the President and , Sec lirotsry of the Northwestern Union Packet ;Company, or. more popularly known as the i # , White Collar" line, has been the subject of a great deal of commentand speculation, all of which was set at rest :yesterday by the announcement that the managers of the St. Louis and Quinoy . Packet Company had, for reasons best knoWn to theinselves, transferred the stock .atid Material of their Company, consisting' of three Steamboats, viz: Tom ..Yasper, Victory and Mollie Mo- Pike, and the wharfbaat .1. C. Swan, to the Northwestern Union Packet Company, and the two.lines, ( now united and consolidated, will continue the brisiriess-,under the title of the - Northwestern Union racket Corn pithy.' This consolidation virtually puts an end to the "Opposition" that has existed for the past two - years in the -trade between this city and Kixokuk. asiCaptain Davidson proposes to deveto his energieslo. tne St. Paul trade; in •which he now proposes to runrnna daily line, •r ftlier and 'Weather.'
