FINANCE A.ND TRADE,
OFFICE OF irmi PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
WEDNESDAY. July 29, 1868.
.The recent:congresaional enactment, or
their attempts, ,have materially assisted
these schemers, and it is not improbable
that securities will have to be returned or
held there simply on margins instead of
seeing them sold out-right to the capitalists
of Europe. In view of all these things,
and the constant increased Shipments of
coin to Europe, gold went up, to 144 1 A to
day, and is steadily rising; the market be
comes firmer-with the decrease of the vol
ume of coin on private hands, and the
Government has go means of checking the
advance, even it it would attemptisuch a
mad and foolish measure. There now no
reason to believe that gold will depline be
fore the beginning Of September next,
when the cotton shipments will commence.
Presidessa
Government bonds did not respond to
the rise in goldto-day, but declined from
34 to V„ per cent. Now Five Twenties are
very dull, andlthe demand for them is en
tirely confined•to small investments. The
question whether government bonds are
to be taxed and the interest reduced, is
now agitated in Europe, not so-much by
the people, but by the iitoriied interest of
the different stock exchanges in Vienna,
Berlin, Frankfort, &c. There now exists a
mania for speculation In all Sorts of private
enterprises, stock companies 'and - credit
fanciers, that equals oil speculation in
Pennsylvania. In order to makci room
for all the:A) stock gambling companies the
more sold investments must be weakened,
and tneir solidity surrounded witbdoubts.
The stock market was rather weak to
day, and quotations have declined; some
of the western roads, such,as North West:
ern common , and preferred, Cleveland &
Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne,,New York Cen
tral and Erie. Express shares are dull,
with a slight decline.
Money is very easy, but there is an min
-
smelly large amount of mortgages con
stantly offering in larges,nd,sinallamounts
ranging from $25,000, $50,900 and $60,000,
most of them on what seems to be good se
curity, but not promptly available in case
of a failure to 'pay promptly.' Busineali is
very dull. ,

prerssußcu MARKET 3.
OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE, t
WEDNESDAY, July, 29, 1868.
The general markets are moderately ac
tive, and while the transactions are mainly
of a local and unimportant character, there
is, nevertheless, a fair volume of business, •
in the aggregate. In regard to values,
however, there is no - stability, and were it
not for this, trade would , be much better,
and until there are good and. substantial
reasons that Grain and Flour are likely to
rule higher or lower, no material, improve
ment in business need be expected. Ope
rators will not take hold with any degree
of freedom until these facts have been as-
certained, and, in the meantime, as in the
past, the policy will be to keep down
_ .
stocks to the lowest possible limit.. '
GROCERIES—Tne grOcery market al
though moderately active, is quiet and de
void of any excitement, and judging from •
present indications, 'is likely to remain so
for some time to come. There is a very
fair demand for Raw Sugars, which is
usually the case at this particular season, ,
when large quantities are wanted all over
the country for putting up small fruits.
Coffee keeps up well, in sympathy with
gold; while Rice, Spices, Fruits, Soap and
Candles, are unchanged in every respect.
It 1B imposaible to quote Fish correctly, in
'consequence of the great difference in
weights. We are assured, that in many
cases Fish, which should weigh one hun
dred pounds to, the barrel, only weigh 70
to 75 pounds. We quote: .
