continues extremely abundant;' the banks
in New York are pot able to find employ
ment. for their balances on call at better
figures than 3to 4 per cent On discounts
there is less dens at toe minimum of six
per cent., and on prime names having
three or four months to run Is generally
seven per cent. In Philadelphia and Boa
.
ton the case is , but little 'different. The
New York _Evening Poat says of thdrailway
ehare market:
"The strength of prices appears to be at
tributable rather to the persistent support
of the wealthy cliques controlling the lead
ing stocks, than to any special intrinsic
causes in the roads themselves. While it
is true that the earnings of the railways
are large, and that the expected abundant
harvest warrant 'the prOmise of large rail
road freights in the latter months of the
year, yet is beleived that these earnings,
present and prospective, have been dis
counted in the peesent high prices; and
that should the cliques, by reason of an
active money market, be for i mdlo unbur
den any considerable portion of aieir load,
a sharp and sudden decline would follow."

REFINED—The market for refined oil
whilels a shadtk_stronger to-day, and
the sales, tbe r aggregate, were not
unusually.large, the'dernand seemed to be •
:more active, and,-if anything, prices ruled
a shade higher. There were two sales of
500 each for*July at 34c; 1,000 for last half
of August at 343jc; 500 for same delivery,
seller's' option, at 313.5 e, and 1,500, 500 each_
for September, Oiteber. and November, at
3431 c. It is said that it is difficult to find
first-class buyers for the rate months; and,
we suppose, that if it was not for this ob
stacle, the sales for future delivery would
be considerably larger. Refiners are more
careful about they buyer than lbrmerly;
Many of them would rather sell for a frui
tion less to a goocl reliable buyer, and, in
this, we think, they act wisely.
