Terrible Tragepy at Altoona-Attempted

The 'Elarrlaburg Telegraph, of Monday,
corktains the following amount of a fearful
tragedy at Altoona:
Thomas Merklein, of Mechanicsburg,
was employed in the Pennsylvania rail
road shops at Altoona, where lie labored
for a critaddemble time. Ho there made
the 'acquaintance of a young lady named
Seibert, to whom he became devotedly at
tached and finally the two were betrothed,.
but, from some cause Mies S. recently saw
proper to break the ell ment. Merklein
made repeated effo since, to obtain her
consent to a union, b t without avail. On
Friday evening last h quit work as usual.
but did not return ne t morning. During
the forenoon (Satu y) he visited the res
idence of the Seibert family;andobtained
a private interview wth Miss S. He again
endeavored to gain er consent to__marry
