BRADY & Co. 61jt Vittzburgij 'Eta t+ OM= OF THE PITTI3BITROH GA22BTTE, i . I FRIDAY. July 17, 1868. The government bond markettis more activ e specially the nef issues of 1865,1887 and 18A - butthe old so called foreign bonds are less in demand, !except ton-forties,? which advanced % per Cent. . The unusual ease of the money- 'market at this season of the year, and dullness of business, and`the Railroad share , market force capitalist to use their money; in the absence of any bet ter Investments they are willing to take i gover meats at present prices. Gal is Still higher to-day, opening at 142%, t nd closing at 143% to 143%; the rise is very steady, and there no excitement whateyer but a regular de mand to pay for imported goods for which gold had to be shipped or to pay dutieS l requiring like wiss gold. The rise is mai ly due to enor mouspeculations on the ear side prior to iJuly st by importers w o thought to in- E t Hoene the gold brokers, ut the market did no t yield after my payments comm need; although large amounts were ' thrown on the market. The brokers have it in their power to run up gold to any price they cimose,'having nothing to fear from the Treasury De partm nt. So it it maybe safely estimated that b lore September next the premium cantio decline materially, since before tht time cotton cannot be skipped, and gold has to supply the place of exchange. Stocks are a little stronger, but business is inactive, and quotations are only sus tained to-day to yield to-morrow in order to keep the brokers employed. Express shares ieflect 'the general dull ne'ss of business—they are steadily de clining. . Money Is in full supply at rates ranging from 8 to 10 per cent. ()losing quotations as mewed by Ph. R. Mertz, were as follows: ' . President. Cashier. House on Monday, it was discussed two hours, but no action was reached then or since. Mr. Moorhead assailed Special Commissioner • Wells very bitterly, and charged hint with.defeating the increase of the tariff both at the last and, present ses sion. The vote on taking up the bill was 84 to 57, there I being three Pennsylvtuda Demoofrata among the, affirmative, and thirty Republicans among the negative votes.
