gold has to supply the place of exchange.
Stocks are a little stronger, but business
is inactive, and quotations are only sus
tained to-day to yield to-morrow in order
to keep the brokers employed.
Express shares ieflect 'the general dull
ne'ss of business—they are steadily de
clining. .
Money Is in full supply at rates ranging
from 8 to 10 per cent.

7 -When the tariff bill was up in the .
House on Monday, it was discussed two
hours, but no action was reached then or
since. Mr. Moorhead assailed Special
Commissioner • Wells very bitterly, and
charged hint with.defeating the increase of
the tariff both at the last and, present ses
sion. The vote on taking up the bill was
84 to 57, there I being three Pennsylvtuda
Demoofrata among the, affirmative, and
thirty Republicans among the negative
votes. Any definite important action on
this bill at the iiresent session is doubted:

CRUDE—The market for Crude. was
again considerably excited to-day", though
the feeling in regard to prices was
scarcely as strong as it was last evening;
then there were sales effected at 15, while
to-day, so far as we could learn, 14% was
the best that could be obtained, though
some parties were still holding out for 15.
The cause assigned fdr the firmness which
prevailed last evening was the report that
Antwerp had advanced to 54; this turned
out to be untrue, 51 being the figure instead
of 54, • The sales reported were as follows :
