Shubael Jones put it up, planted a little
orchard aroundl4'and-ISKltlbTt6lEhlfl9cK:
eyed, high-tempered trifh.P N, , ,Bit. he , tria at
that time an incipient drunkard, and soon
every appearanae* , of ,comfort and domestic
happiness fled. the place. And one dismal
November :night the wretched wife sum
moned her neighbors front their beds to go.
where the poor sot lay dead at the foot of
the cellar stairs. No inquest was held, none
doubted that he was killed by -a Dfall in a
drunken fit in ,attempting another visit,to
his cider barrel.
'The widow rented the 'place to a tenant
who neither kept it well nor paid its rent.
She went With her little boy, who was not
quite an idiot, to work in the paper mill at
the village, then called- "Shipmuck." For
long years she changed from factory to
factory, as best she could keereher son em
ployed. He was always:harmless and still.
He was always obediert when under hie
mother's eye and working at her side ' but
the, prudent people of Ludlow, where they
last lived, feared to allow them to "gam a
settlement," and thus render their town Ha.,
ble for their future support. < So they ob.
taihed 'the consent of the agent that the
widow and her son .need not , keep strict
time, and offered to furnish a room in her
old desolate house., three miles from the fac-
tor)", if she would live there. The proud
wonilak understood - the motive, and, with a
flash of her dark eyes 'declined their kind
ness. ' But she soon bought a little furniture
of a family. that was moving awaY, and re
established herself in the gloomy. old wreck.
It-was now late in the fall when" the. widow
Jonetefirst noticed that the grass.was disap
pearing from the road side by thebara oppo-
site her door. •It soon - grew obviously
worse;- and though a bald - spot 'on a man's
bead is no great wonder, thitibare spot, with
no hoof-marks on it, baffled all her ingenu
ity. The fence too seemed:_victin, as if by
loungers leaning upon it. What could that
mean ? No human • gathering could have
been held in that lonely_place sines the day
when that moldering frame was, raised
except on that sad day when the moldering
frame of the owner went to its long home.
The explaination of that mystery involves
us in a deeper one. One night in . Beptem
tember a man from-Ludlow was passing the
house just after the factory bell had an
nounced the hour of nine. As he neared
the house he heard a groan. It was a single
'groan. and then all was still. But it was
,such a groan as no,one utters twice, and he
i who hears it never wishes to hear it again.
lHe felt it his duty to rush into the house,
but he dared not. After long hesitation
he went on his way speculating whether ,
the widow had murdered her idiot
son or had been murdered by . him. -And
when he saw them both ' Conte quietly Into
the village , the next morning he doubted
first his eyes and next his memory. '
But the same `errand again brought him
past that lonely house a few nights later.
Again he heard the nine o'clock bell as he
toh
app
approached the house, and again, as he was
oppos to the house, that dreadful . groan.
Then next night he walked out with aneigh
bar, timing his steps that when near the
house di heard that mortal sound. Both
were certain that it came from the house.
Three went out, and five, and fifteen; and
thirty. All heard the groan and all agreed
that it was exact to itritime to a quitter of a
minute. Old Captain Ilardcastle Said that
if he were shut up in a hold.as-dark astalk
' night, he could tell within ten minutes
*hen the time for his "leven o'cl , .ck" came,
but he couldn't,keep time with a ghost.- One
[ guessed the spirits heard .the bell: The
agent stopped the bell one night, but the
groan was heardarusuid. And it was not
a similar groan, but the same grotp, ,
re
peated every night since poor Jones `broke •
1 his neck." Otheri said th,at' if' they were
