Afterweary years of waiting, Erie is be
ginning to be appreciated, and is now every
wide awake, thriving 1 city. Adequate ap
prOpriations have atlength been made for
the improvement of the harbor, which is
now going on steadily, and ins short time
we shall have the best, as we already have
by far the most beautififi harbor on the
lakes. - The completion of the Erie and
Pittsburgh '• Railroad has done ' much
towards waking up Erie from it long lath
argy, and now there is more business done
at the Pittsburgh do& than at all of the
others in the harbor put together; life Is
the order of the day, and the city fathers
share in the general feeling, forl 'the pipes
for the new water works are being laid in
the streets. The city has beenlwithin the
last eighteen months admirably sewered,
and many of . the' beautiful streets have
been or are immediately to be paved with
Nicolson. Some beautiful new blocks of
buildings havebeen put up on State street,
which IS fast assuming a metropolitan air;
and on Sixth and Ninth streets :elegant
dwellings are. the rule almost without an
excePtion. Private enterpriseus erected
l
an oxtensive grain elevator elos to the bay,
and a number of water lots hay been pur
ehased by some energetic mon who purpose
building blast furnaces, a rolling mill and
a nail factory, receiving the ore direct,
without change of bulk, from Lake Supe
rior, and'the coal in the same manner from
Mercer and Lawrence (mantles by way of
the Erie and Pittsburgh road. I
The idea of the widening of the Beaver
and-Erie 'canal - into a ship canal, by which
Pittsburgh and Erie should be connected,
is favorably and hopefully received--here,
and it would be hard to convince these peo
ple,- who have fought so sncoessfnlly
against all opposition to their harbor im
provements, that perseverence and pa
tience will not pnivailin this instance also.
-;Volutnes of praise and description could
be written about Erie, but I am afraid you
would hardly find space to print them. I
am sure, though, that every member of
either jury wdl join me in expressing
appreciation of_the kindness of the Judge,
and - -General Rowley and Of - the
hospitality of the citizens here. Nqr can I
wind up withobt reference to the two great
drawbacks here; first, the intense heat,
which has been only moderated by the
lake 'breezes,( and which has continued
without rain for a fortnight; and, second,
the dust, which, is fearfully and wonder
fully deep, the atri3ets haying been re
