FINANCE AND TRADE, =
OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH , GAZETTE,
SATURDAY, July 11, 1868.
Gold was strong to-day at • 140% .to 141 yo
closings:K-140X. The demand for coin for
the purpose of shipment to Europe is
,in
creasing, and although the Sub-Treasury
is daily paying out considirable amounts
ofeohl for interest, the market is barely
supplied. Considerable::- purchases_ are
made for hoarding; and.the same clasi of
men that talked up gold last November area'
trying to run up the premium now. •
Government , bonds were less firm to-
day, with only a moderate investment de
mand, and no dispokition is mimifested to
buy and hold for higher prides, especially
is this the case with the Five Twenties of
the July issue.. Ten Forties remain firm
at 107%; also, 1862 s and • 18655, old 'issue.
Eighty-one bonds are much neglected; ac
cording to the Pendleton doctrine these
bonds are no better than 1865 Consols or
18645. The recommendation of the Demo
cratic Convention of paying the Govern-
anent bonds in currency finds au interpriii
cation iihich differs
, widely from the coilf
monly conceived idea of the masses,' thait
is, manuacinring greenback.s . to redeem
the bonds with; but, financiers, like*el
mont and his Wall street friends, wiSh to
.._ , .
improve the. currency :by the economical
administration of the governments anaui`
ces, by taxing sufficient to leave a suiplus
to redeem bonds with{ and thus raise the
V,Overnments credit,and advance the nds
to such a greenback premium that they
would command about par in gold. \Pay
ment-of bonds then in currencywould
Practically be a resumption of specie pay-
Uients. The present enormous imports
,
and necessary shipments of bullion to pay
for, shows . a poor prospect of raising the
Governments credit to such an extent that
they would command par, in gold. With
the advance of the premium bonds, 'gold
should decline, and'thus greenbacks would
gradually approach the , standard par of
gold. . , , • , ,
Stocks are dull and inactive. Border
State bonds are a little better, bu,t flops

press shares are neglected.

SATURDAY,. July 11:1868-
CRUDE—The, Crude market was again
dull and weak to-day, but a single sale re
ported, 2,006( bbls-500 each from, August
to December. seller's option, at 1430. Spot
oil was offe red freely at 14c without finding
buyers,_ x tz
d future deliveries were offered
at 14 ; the former shows a decline of
fully a -cent, and, even at the redudion,
the demand seemed to be very much re-,
stricted, and the market was devoid of that •
life and animation Which privalled during
the week up until Friday. It isnot a little
remarkable that while Antwerp has ad
vanced to a figure not before attained this
year, our own, as well as the eastern mar
, kets, have been dull and weak for two
1 'days past, and to-day there were no indi
cations of an improvement. It should be
borne in mind, however, that the market
IS usually very senzdthe at this particular

main 0111150 for the present reaction lies in
the fact that the production, it is, believed,
is steadily increasing , the West and most
- reliable advises we `,"have place the daily
yield between eleven and twelve thousand
6rm,ba, which is an , increase of about two
thousand barrels within , the last , three
months. • Akan offset to this, however, it
'is stated that the demand for consumption ,
• is, and Will be considerably larpr this year
than last, new marketahaving been opened
up; it is also alleged that about ten than
smut barrels per day are being exported to
foreign countries. , , •
REFINED—The demand for bonded oil
was also very quiet to-day, though, com
pared with yesterday, prices {aye I .
gone no quotable change. Compared with.
Wednesday and Thursday, however, there'
has beeila decline of frOm one to one and a

the market, is quiet, even at the reduction.

OFFICE OF THE PITISMIRGIL GAZETTE,
SAfIVEDAY I , ,Tuly, 141888.
The general markets have been dull, and- , 7
quiet during the past week, and devoid of I
anything new or very important. Flour Is
firmer, but - it be temporary; we
look for a fartheidecline notwithstanding
,
it has advanced slightly in the West. Pr&
visions firmer more active and a shade
higher. Grain is quiet and unchanged.
Groceries continue; dnll and neglected,
though as the fruit season is_near at hand,.,_..
there will be an:active demand for sugars. _
Butter, Eggs and -
produce generally dull
`end unchanged.. •
GRAlN—Wheat is quiet, and but little ''
coffering, either old or new; quotations may
be given at $2,20 to 82,25, as to quality. The
;supply of old crop in this section of coati- r
..try.is well nigh exhausted, and it is too
early yet for new. ,Corn is firmer and sonic
holders are asking an advance; we are"
quoted
,sales of prime Yellow at $1,09, but
this as yet is about three cents above the
market. Rye is scarce and in the absence --
of sales.. may be_ quoted at $1,75 to 41,80.
`Oats dull butlinchanged at 77 to .7cB on_
track, and 80c in store.
PROVISIONS Bacon is firm and_ 1
higher. with an'iniproved demand: we, now;

in the west, has not advanced very much
here, as yet, though there is a firmer feel
