Samuel. Lover, the Irish author who
has contributed so largely towards supply
ing the world much to laugh at in such
works as "Rory O'litore," "Handy Andy,"
and like productions, died in Dublin re
cently at' the age of seventy-one years. Mr.
,Lover was small in stature,- genial and
companionable, full of song and mirth, and
the productions from his humorous - pen will
survive him many years. •

Pianos
Schroter, one of the many to whom is as
cribed the invention of the pianoforte, pub
lished an account of tlie instrument in 1768,
in whiCh he says the performer may "at
pleasure play fort (loud), or piano (soft);"
and the present name is believed to hay&
been iitziggested by this statement. The pi
ano-fort is really a harp, operated by ma
chinery instead of the direct action of the
fingers. At first it was very simple; but
additions and improvements were made
from time to ' time, until its present
state of perfection was reached. The fol
lowing from Oliver Optic's Our Boy's and
Giri's Magazine is interesting :
The piano should be 'closed when not in
use, in order to prevent the collection of
dust, .tc., on the • sound-board, and' also to
preserve the strings and "action" from the
ill effects of sudden change of 'tempersture.
Nothing can injure a piano so much as ex
treme heat, whether arising from a bright fire
in front of it, or, what is worse, the hot air
in the furnaces ,in such generafuse. Care
should he takis, to prevent moisture of any
kind from getting between the keys, par
ticularly when clouting them, as it will
cause,them to stick. Moths are destructive
to planthiptd should be kept out of them
by placing a lamp of . camphor, wrapped in
paper to prevent evaporation in the inside
.corner. Any, hard substance placed upon
a'piano will cause a jarring noise, and if the
top part is .unprotected by a cloth cover,
that also will often rattle. Young Pianists
would injure the piano less if .they would
i refrain from Striking the keys with such
force; a little touch, with a judicious use of
the loud pedal, will yield a far better and
equally as full a tone as if they exerted all
the force at their command.
Few are aware of the benefit to be derived
from having their. pianos regularly tuned
slid kept in, ordor; every new piano • should
be tuned at, least once a month, and none
should be allowed ,to remain untuned over
three. When a Plano is half a note below
concert pitch, and it is required to be drawn
up,• it should bii; twice tuned, the second
,itiii4ng about a month after the first, or it,
will not stand well in tune.
It would be well_ to remember that the
tuning of a piano consists only, of tighten
ing and relaxing the strings to the requisite
degree. '
