(Prom the Dubuque Times.' ij, We are.about to relate a strange story— nne that might be doubted were it ',not sup ported by the testimony of numerous wit -I,:teases. The particulars were related to us i -F....by a friend in whom we have the utmost ..;Confidence, and we will proceed to lay them ;_'before the public withoitt further comment: r Forsome time past Mr. Jacob Monteith, ;an enter prising farmer, residing about ten ;. !miles ii nth of Galena, has been grievous Qly torte nted with rats. These pests under rnined is barns and granaries ' destroyed ?:his hen roosts, and finally took possession 1 I s ' ' of his cellar. To - such an extent did they - carry their ravages that it was impossible to keep anything in theprovision line about „,li the house. Nice sweet hams, stowed away in the cellar, would be found next morn ing up in the garret, barrels and boxes full '...Cfholes, while cloth ng and other articles f.of more or less value turned up non eat in , ;menisci.' At first our friend tried. What virtui3 :there was in eats, and -procured ii. , whole P.brigade, but the rats : went for the felines, .* h ';:'and after a number of pitched attics clean : 4`.01 the latter out, the cats retiring in disgust • 'et° more congenial quarters. Next the ser vices of some full-blooded terriers werepro 'l.cured, but for every rat 'tlmt.'was killed a i'dozeii, took his place, until the terriers were • even forced to give it up as a bad job, and 'finally:refused to eleitethei_r liiewenpon- an ',other rodent. Going to Galena, Mr. Mon kleith procured about twenty traps which he used foF,awhilitwith great success; but the ;.pests emit-became - shy , and refused to be ' i caught. About six o'clock last Thursday - morning farmer into lug . Cellar to ti see how much game he had 'bagged during the night,- In one of the traps he found a .-;-, rat gray with age who looked as though he ;, might - be the patriarch of the whole flock, i. and he proceeded to dispatch him ~. at once. Armed with a short stick he ap proached the trap, when the imprisoned rat : set up Piercing squeal. ' Stooping doWn, 1.. ' Mr. Monteith was b o ut to give hisratship ii: the eoiiiide r `ordee, when; - strange to relate, tt,_ a whole swarm of rats, attracted by the frantic squeals of their comrade, rushed out it from their, holes. and':liiding ;places; and =] comprehending the situation at, uce, charg ed dowpln solid pdalanx upon their ene y. m. V They climbed upon his legs and back ; bit ~,,, his arms, hands, neck and face, until tired of the sport, and finding that he was severe . i! ly bitten, Mr. Monkifik beat a retreat up the -11 stairway, leaving the rats in 'possession of c• the field.• A ft er he had rested a short time, „„'," and reinforced himself with his wife and two ''.! older boys, each armed with a'stout cudgel, --"- he descended into the cellar again. deter .) 1:# - mined "to fight it out in that line, if it took ~, all summer." - But the rats had-evidently 17. got the worst of it, for when the party rea b -4 eg the scene of the conflict not a living one ; was to. be seen none but the dead and il dying. The latter were soon despatched, '4 when an inventory was taken of the hodies tof the slain: ,i They were found to number three hun -1 dyed and eighty-six by actual count. Their l', removal was a task of no little difficulty, 1 but this was finally accomplished. - Not a 4 living rat has been seen on the premises l'',' since, and Mr. M nteith now congratulates :;: himself on being rid of the annoying pests. 4 ..1 As before stated, the above particulars were .I 4 received from a reliable source, and we have ~A I merely related it as related to us.'
