-,The details of a hideous crime, commit-
ted at Nismes on the 10th or 11th of Novem
ber last, have recently.: appeared in the
Freric.h journals. A husband and wife
named Hairianns,"under the excitement , of
religions frenzy, murdered, in the most
cruel manner, their daughter, aged thirteen
years and six months,• after having drawn
from her,, by long-continued and terrible
torture, a confession that she had been guil
ty of certain immodest acts. The mother
had been in early life an abandoned woman,
and the child was illegitimate. After her
marriage, the woman Hermanns had how-
ever become fanatically pious, and it was
under this influence that the daughter was
murdered. The girl had been for months
systematically starved and treated in a phi
lesi\manner. Daring the murder the pa
rents sang hymns to drown the shrieks of
their victim. As no indications of madness
seem to have been manifest except insane
hatred of the girl; the. couple were con
demned—the mother to imprisonment with
hard work for life; the father to ten years
of labor. •
A Woman Sentenced' te' Death.
In Philadelphia, on Priday, Hester
Vaughn, a young woman, was sentenced to
death for the murder of her babe.
The initiative sin committed by this poor
girl, her suffering, the murder of the little
babe, the arrest, trial, conviction, and the
motion for anew trial defeated; all having
transpired, there remained but one step to
be taken by the Court in the sad affair—the
paasing . of the sentence of death. Up to
this period the unfortunate woman did not
realize her position. She knew nothing of
the peril she was in. Even after the rendi- .
tion of the verdict, she carelessly asked her
counsel how long a term of imprisonment
she would receive, and that good gentleman
could not bring himself to tell her that the
penalty of her crime would send her into.
eternity. But now every effort of his for ,
her rescue having proved unsuccessful, he
Communicated to her in as gentle a manner
as he could her situation; and then, for th
first time, fully aviakc to the awful doom
pending over her, she became violently agi
tated and wept.
By the direction of the Court, the Clerk
asked her if she had anything to say why
the sentence of death should not be pro
nounced upon her according to law, to which
she made no answer.
She was told to stand up, and Judge Did•
low then in- a most impressive manner,
said, Hester Vaughn, a jury have convicted
you of the highest crime known to our
laws and-it is our duty to say that, under
the evidence, no other verdict ought, accord
ing to our law, to have been rendered. _
We would be' less than human did we not
