Laying :6al-Traciu by Machinery. (From the Saultitanotaeo Alta Ca'f(brilla, May la.) The railroad track-layer is an indubitable and decided *access. It, is' now working :along regtdarly at the rate of a mile a day, and it will& 'better when several email de fects are retnetlied. Some of ,its work has tee,n done atthe rate of two miles in twelve hours, but one mile is considered its pres ent workingnapacity. The contractor and directors of the Vallejo and i Sacramento Railroad, although most of them were skep tical, and some quite dissatisfied about the delays in getting it into operation, give it the highest praise, and have made their ar rangements en reliance upon it. The machine is a car sixty feet long and ten feet wide. It has a small engine on board for handling the ties and rails. The ties are carried on tt'common freight car be hind, and conveyed by an endless chain over the top of the machine, laid down in their places on the track, and when enough are laid a rail is put down on each side in a proper position, and spiked down. The track-layer then advances, and keeps on its work until the load of ties and rails is ex:- haasted, when other car loads are brought. The maclAne is driven ahead by a locomo tive, and the work is done so rapidly that sixty men are required to wait on it, but they do more work than twice as many could do by the old system, an,d the work is done quite as well. The chief contractor of the road gives it as his opinion that when the machine is improved by making a few changes in the method of handling rails and ties, the necessity of which changes is now apparent, it will be able to put down five or six miles per day unquestionably. This will render it possible to lay down track twelve times as fast as the usual rate by hand, and it will do the work at less ex pense. Telegraphs. Some interesting facts in the history of telegraphic communication are given by Herr Neumann in an edictal report recently published at Vienna. It appears from this report that a line of telegraph was opened between Persia and Russia by way,of the Caucasus as early as 1859. Telegraphic communication between Europe and North ' em Asia was also first established by the Russian Government, which laid down a ,line between Moscow and .Omsk in 1862, and exterded it to the Sea of Japan by way of Irkutsk and Kiacta in 1864. A Russian telegraphic agency exists at Pekin, through which messages are transmitted from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. The line is now carried to Behring's Straits by Okhotsk. - The total length of the European telegraphs is 53,340 geographical miles; of those in America, 14,289• of those in Asia, 4,736• of those in Australia,l,B42; of those in Africa, I,so4—exclusive f submarine lines. There are in all 1,200 telegraph stations, and the number of persons employed in them is about 28,000. The total weight of wires is calculated at 1,300,000 cwt., and there are about 7,500,090 telegraph posts, which it costs £200,000 a year to keep up. The cap ital expended in the construction of the va rious telegraphs is £16,500,000: "A SHOEMAKER PHYIHOWG/ST" is Con tributing to the Shoe and Leather Reporter a series of papers on the proper treatment of that delicate and much abused organ, the human foot, by boot and shoe-makers. In his last paper he says: "There will still re main to be discovered a mode of covering the foot which will secure it to its natural freedom. What this will be, it is not easy just now, to tell. Possibly, it may take the peculiarity of the glove, and provide sepa rate apartments for each of the toes, becom ing thus a kind of a foot-glove, with a flexi ble sole, separated between the toes, and which will allow them to bend or spread, and the whole foot to lengthen or contract without hindrance, whenever occasion may require." - - RATB—HOW To FIX THEM.—Chloride of lime has frequently proved a sure thing to drive rats from any place infected by:them. An exchange says: An ounce of it scatter ed in the place where they come to feed, or wrapped in muslin and put in their leoles, where it acquires dampness, produces a gas that is not offensive to man, but is to rats. If chloride of lime Is moialened with rntui- • atic acid, and placed in a 'drain, vault or cellar, and 'closed from the air a little while, the rats will depart, because it will be death to remain. This lettlso a good disinfectant, and will, for a time, cure the effluvia of a dead rata One application of chloride of lime to rat holes has driven them away for a year, when a renewal of it started them again.
