The river is again receding at this point with four feet three inches in the channel, by the Monongahela marks last evening. The Allegheny is also falling with twenty four inches reported at Oil City yesterday. The weather was cool and pleasant though at times the indications were favorable sor rain. • The Deleware from Nashville is the only arrival we have to report, and the Julia No. 2 for Zanesville, was the only departure. The Messenger, from St. Louis, and J. N. McCallough, from Cincinnati, are among the first boats. The lifcCullough may be ex pected in to-night.- The Camelia, Capt. Wm. Dean, is an nounced for St. Louis, and she is in splen did trim for the low water season. • Capt. Lewis Vaudergrift, late of the ArosV. 1 has assumed command of the Charmer, and is now loading her. for St. Louis. She has just been overhauled And re red ' and nicely repainted: Capt. Isaac Whittaker, has charge of the'ciffice. Capt. John Shunk, an old Pittsburgh stamboatman butmho for some years past has been a resident or Clhcinnati; has . assumed command of the Kateßobinson, in place of Capt. Itobt Robinson; who has been appointed agent of the Hoboken Land Co., with •hiS office at No. 76 Federal - street, Allegheny. Capt. S hank is now loading the Kate for St. Louie, and expects to get away on h"rlday. The to boat Fearless, with her empty barges, arrived yestegdsy morning from McKee's Rocks, where sthe has been lying for some 'time awaiting a rise. The low boats Diamond, Coal Hill, Whale, Lion, with' there tone of empty bareee , all of which have been at the Dead Man, finable to get through, will now be able to get up, the recent rise. In the Allegheny furnishing ample water for the purpose. • The steamers of the rival St. Louis and St. Paul lines ore hotly competing for trade and in speed. According to our up river exchanges, they race down and up. The Dayenport paper of Saturday says the Hawkeye and Itasca raced all the way hence to that point. It says: "They had a lively time, and there was sport at every landing. The Itasca has a brass band—the Hawkeye State employs a tin band. The Itasca broke her wheels on the rapids and had to lay to for repairs. The Hawkeye State left our levee flrst,.wlth horns toot ing. The Itasca over to Rock Is land, took on coal, and , attuted a ft er her "adversary." So that they will go to St. Paul and back, and probably keep It up until boilers or bands burst. The Red river packet Caroline is laid up at New Orleans. • The storm at Louisville on Friday was very severe, and several boats were slightly damaged. Captain (eorge V. Stackpole was thrown from his horse on Thursday last, and, al. though not supposed to 'be hurt at the time, received injuries that threaten to be fatal. One or two ribs were bri, ken, and it is supposed that his lungs were scratched or bruised by the broken rib.- He is lying at his home, on the Illinois river. Mr. John W. Eckley, a popular clerk in the New Orleans trade, has abandoned the river and gone to . California, having started on Thursday for San Francisco. The Indians along the Upper Missouri are hostilef-driving all the wood-yard men front their camps, and are reported to have fired into several boats going • up, but the Miner, (wither way down, passed entirely unmolested. Captain John A. Duble has resigned the command of the Atlantic and Miasistdppl Steamship packet, W. R. Arthur. and will be succeeded by Capt. Pat. Yore, late of the Continental. Mr, Chassaing, having also resigned, will be succeeded by Mr. James Yore. 1 The Lady Grace. bound up, and the Leo nora, bound down, eollided on Thursday night, nearly opposite Milton, Kentucky. The Leonora sustained considerable injury, having one whole side of her guards taken off from stem-to stern. The Lady Grace was not. damaged any. On her last trip dawn, the Robert E. Lee was aground some eighteen hours at Plum. Plaint and would have had contdderable- trounle in getting off, but for timely assist ance rendered by the towboat Stella. We can hardly Imagine what her pilots would do with her in low water if they can't aveliF "pulling her out" at the present stage. ' The following conversation occurred lately on one of our fine packets: "I say. Mr. Pilot, ain't you going to start soon?" " said a nervous traveler on a steamboat 1y... ingto during a fog. "As soon as the og clears up," replied the Captain. "We f ll, it's starlight now overhead," sald.tho man. "Oh, yes, but we are not going that way." We clip the follovring from the Cincin nati Gazette, of Monday: The . Wattanita, Pittsburgh to St. Louis, arrived last even ing, with a barge in tow: Boat and barge contained about 400 tuns. She will receive 100 tuna today, and depart this evening. The J. N. McCullough arrived from Pittsburgh at half past eight o'clock last night, and immediately behind her the St. Charles, which only • went as far up as Wheeling. Both boatsleave for Pittsburgh this evening. There will be a lively tune among them to-day, - as all take Pittsburgh freight; We donrt, believe either the St. Charles or the McCullough can go through to Pittsburgh. . The Parkersburg Times, of the 10th inst., says that Messrs. Spencer and Cole of that place, have been awarded the contract, by the United States Government, for remov ing snags and other obstructions in the Upper OldO, and they are now busily en gaged in bnilding crane boats and deck flats at' the Parkersburg Mill Co's yard, and also refitting the steamer Zebra for the same purpose. • River and Weather.
