MEMSE
The Alleglie4 river Mee several inches
during - 13rilidaY night and Yeaterday, and
ins still rising slowly last evening with
about five feet in the channel. The Bio
nongahela,also rose several inches, but it
was mainly , back water from the Alle
gheny. At 011 City the Allegheny was re
ported rising i With two feet in the chann6l.
The weather here continues clondyand un
settled with frequent showers of rain.
'The Julia . No; from Zanesville, ar
rived on Sunday evening, and •will return
again to-day at 4 p.m. The Glasgow arrived
and departed for Parkersburg.
The J N. McCullough , from Cincinnati,
is due here to-morrow, and will return.. as
usual on Wednesday.
• The Delaware was due from Nashville
last night, and will probably be found in
port this morning.
The St. Marys arrived at Louisville on
Friday. It is said that she. will enter the
Louisville and New Orleans trade. •
• The Camelia has a shingle out for St.
Louis. She is an excellent low water boat,
and she lasi ust been thorough overhauled,
repaired and repainted.
The Messenger, en route from St. Louis
to Pittsburgh, is laid up at Wheeling. Her
manifest will be found elsewhere.
The Lorena is announced to leave for St.
Louis this evening. • '
Ositit.-W. S. Evans of the firm Evans, Dal
las & Gilmore, has received intelligence to
the effect that the Andrew Ackley, arrived
at Fort Benton on the 17th.
The .SU Louis iftepubiican, of SatnrdaY,
says: Business, which , has • been most re
markabl,y good and active during the en
tire season, shows no particular signs of
any serious diminishing betoye the ,usual
fall trade sets in. Freights continue abun
dant for all.points, - and, although 'ides are
very low, yet as the steambanfli' generally
are having' good trips - "both ways," as a
consequence: balances although small are
on the right •of the ledger. The Pauline
Carroll cleared yesterday. •
.A late, Nashville paper says: On Weil
oesday last ; Capt. John Cartwright and
family and several relatiYes were poiecned
from partaking of food which it was supl
Dosed contained arsenic. Having - partaken
of a hearty dimier,, Capt: Cartwright and
wife, Capt. R. L. Dia:nukes, Mrs. Tindall
and old negro woman shortly afterward
were taken suddenly ill, and it . was evi
dent that the serious illness was the result
of poison. A physician was sent for, who
gave. it as hisopinion that arsenic had been
mixed with the .food...,The proper anti
dotes were prescribed, and yesterday the
entire family, • with the exception of the
negro woman, were in a fair way of recove
ry. The • affair is still' shrouded in mys
tery, and how the arsenic was administered
is unaccountable. ' -
:The second mate of the Dexter got into a
quarrel with one the negro deck bands
and olzot , him , dead, below Baton Rouge.
After the, deed was committed the mate cut
loose the boat's yawl and made his escape.
After lie cut lobse ,the yawl thsboat was
stopped, rounded; to and.fbr the yawl, and
just reached it in time to see the matejump
on shore and take'to the woods. Some half
dozen of the 'ni3gro bands of the boat gave
chase and were out some time, when two

A St. Louis telegram, under date of Sat
