Pittsburgh, and these alone enable her to
grow rich making iron by such brutish
methods;" and then went on to instance the
case of single puddling furnaces 'without
blast—failure to superheatstearn,nridso on,

The other great iron firm here is Griswold
do Co., of the Rennsalser Iron Works. This
firm and Mr. Morrell,. elf the. -Cambria
1 Works, Johnstown, - Pa., jointly own the
various patents in this country for making
Bessemer steel,. and have been making it
here with 'complete - success". The only other
Bessemer Worts in this country is at Har
risburg, and 'tie subsidiary to Griswold &
CO. • Mere they have two converters, two of
them holding. five tons each, equivalent.to a
capacity of twenty tons each. Only one
converter is now in operation', while blow
ing engines are being completed for the
others. - , A forge for the ingots; with' one of
Sellers' largest steam hammers, is . nearly
completed. A large new.steel riffling 6111;
better planned than any rollingiiiiill have
seen, is partly . In operation. ,It ',lntended
principally for rolling rails, and'will
go far to supereedetheif importation,whieh
is, to be the more• wished, since , the steel
rails sent to this country are not so reliable
as those retained•in England. I have my
self noticed several instances of sudden
breaking of steel rails, and on inquiry found
it'was not uncommon. Whilst this is So,
their superiority to iron will, mainli consist
in their wearing longer. -
The coal used here is brought by the
Deleware and Hudson canal, mostly :rom
Luzern county Pa., the ore from Vermont,
Lake Champlain, and other mining districts
still more distant; yet with . these natural
