The S. N. McCullough is due here from .
Cincinnati this forenoon,- and will leave as
usual to-morrow at noon. Passengers and
shippers Should bear this in mind and act
accordingly.
We clip the following from the Dubuque
Herald: Last season the regular , wages
for pilots on the Upper River
steamers, was $2OO per month. This season
business . opened unfavorably, and active
col n
t istitio- sprung np t resulting in low
tar • acompromise was effected between
the P• otia Association and the N. W. U.
Picket • Conaltany and Ipso per, month agreed
upon. '-Matters progressed Smoothly until
the 20th of April, when Commodore David
son violated his contract - by 'cutting AoWn
wages to $125 per -month, and 'finally a
-month biter 10 , 1175, which last move was
the hair that broke the camel's back: The,
Pilot's Association-then took the matter in
hand, as forbearance had ceased to be a
virtue, and notified Captain Davidson and
ether officers of the line that on the 10th of
June wad would have to be restored to
last year's standard, or a strike would en
sue. That day arriving yesterday, the
pilot-of the City of St. Paul left the boat at
the levee, refusing to perform service until
the demand was acceded to. After detain
ing the boat several hours, with parleying
and efforts' to effect a compromise, the
Packet Company "gave in" and the pilot
took his position behind the wheel at 1400,
per month, whereupon the boat cleared for
St. Paul, and thus matters stand at present.
The increase affects all packets of the com
pany running above this point.
The Cincinnati Gazette says: For months
we have had three tine sidewheel steamers,
running as , regular packeta between here
and Pittsburgh. which will very shortly be
compelled to,quit the trade; and even the
liternwleel boats that may take their places
will not be able te continue in the trade a
'great while. The boats that have been
running that trade this season have gen- •
orally , not fennd it profitable, although
large tit:entities - 6f freight have movedin
that 'direction more, some say, than any
previous season for yehrs. Rates have
been - uniformly low to all above here
on the river, (even to those points not
reached by railroad. • ;
In. the coWsion case of the steamer's Put-,
minx and Belle. at St. ; Louis, Richard
'Fryer, pilot of the latter, is bereft of his li
cense for'6o days. for negligence and inat
tention, in' violating rule second - of the,
rules governing - pilots,- inn eglecting to
stop-his boat' and back her", after It:must
have been , apparent to; him that his first
signal had - not been proPerly understood
by the. pilot of the Rate Putnam.
A Cahotelegram, under date of SundliY,
says:, ! The Galatea, from .Pittsburgmto ;U.
Louis, returned bore this evening;: after
proceeding about twelve miles up the Mis
sissippi, being unable to make headway
against thecurrent, - ,on account of the 'nar
rowness of - ber bucket:l, not Withstanding
she is laden to the guards. Her wheels
make thirty revolutions:. per.. minute ; butt
thedrait in ,her chimneys is, so deficient
that she makes buttwentypeunds or steam
when sixty is desirea. ,Her ;buckets
will be widened ten inches, and her chim
neps;lengthened, and she will ; start again
to-morrow evening. • •
The Vicksburg Times, of Tuesday, says:
Considerable excitement was created yes
terday by-a, race from Warrenton to this
Nee% between the Gen. Quitman and the
- Itiehmeed. • At the time both boats came
in sight they appeared to be running side
by tilde, and seemed to retain their relative
positions until both were abreast of Math
ews' saw-mill; here . the Qaitinau's engi:
nears must have "opened her out," , for she
commenced driving to-the front; and was
some dietance ahead of . the low-pressure
when her bells were,"rung to stop the en
gines. The race, if such it could be called,
was conducted with all due caution andthe
