claimed a superiority over the Northerners,
in culture and refinement, and Louisville

A New Haven correspondentwrites of the
Democratic State Convention:
It was a hard faced and hard-beaded Con
vention. The most careless observer could
not have mistaten it for a philanthropic or
Ncientitic gathering. The least enlightened
gentlemen of .color would have shrunk in
stinctively out of the hall, feeling that these
were not his friends. Yet it was anassem
blage of resolute, clear-headed:strong-willed
men, with - a deal more of insight-than of
philosophy, powerful if narrow; no mean
antagonists for the party of 'moral ideas and
enlarged sympathies. 'And theY went as
grimly and as steadily at „their, work as
though the nomination at New' York Were,
not 'a - matter of total uncertainty, ',and as
though regiment after regiment:of their line
had not gone over to the enemy and pro
nounced for Chase.
