expressed to learn her name. It is the

The Cincinnati Gazette of Monday sari
The America, Pittsburgh to St. Louis, pass- .
ed down at a late hour last night, with
'about three hundred and fifty tons of
freight; fifteen cabin and• seven deek pas
sengers., Two hundred tons of her freight
are for. St..Lonis, five tons for points on the
Missouri , liver, and the balance tor the
upper Mississippi.: Her officers report that
the Graletea (the boat that is claimed to
'make twenty miles !per hour up stream)
passed :them at Eteubenville t and that the
America: passed her a ft erward on Saturday
morning, since which time the Galetea had
not been seen. Either the ildetea passed
the America during Saturday night, and
passed Cincinnati the same night(neither
of which hypothesises are probable,) or the
speed claimed for the former boat by the
Pittaburgh papers is exaggerated.._Tckday
will tell the truth. One of:the - pilots of the
America is. Henry 'Devine, and we believe
the other is McDonough.
The New Orleans Picayune says: The
old ex-Confederate gunboat Selma, which
vessel, made a most gallant fight in Mobile
Bay, is now being fitted out for the Texas
cattle trade. Captain John MoLean, well
knewn hi this city, is an old machinist and
sailor, is to command her. The Selma was
formerly the Mobile packet Florida, of the
Gedda Line, and is now owned by a com
pany in this city.
The Champion, sunk 'at Chenault's
Reach, on Friday, was insured for $15,000,
in the following Cincinnati offices: Na
tional Merchant's and Manufacturers', and
Farmers'j4l2,soo etch, and in the Ohio Val
ley, Germania, Lafayette, Queen City and
Crescent, for $1,500 each.
A St. Louis telegram, under date of Sun
day, , says: Arrived—Marble City, from
Memphis; Key City and Sucker State, from
St. Paul; Columbian, from Omaha; Cora, ,
from , Fort Benton. Departeit--Mahawk
barges, for New Orleans. River stationary,
or falling slightly. Weather clear and cool.
The Cora came from Fort Benton 3,200
miles, in 12 days. Has been out 74 days.
The St. Louis Dispatch, ,of . Saturday,
saysi;;;The New Orleans trade is a very un
settled.state from the fact that the boats
and barges are running dead ..against one
another. Setrunboats
_appear, determined
not to allow any farther discrinunation in
favor of barges, hence the war in rates.
Shipments to New 'Orleans are being made
at about ten cents per hundred, a price that
neither boats or barges can live at. The
trouble does not end there. The Atlantic
line and' outside boats, under the
name of "compromise line" is likely to fall
through from the - fact that. outsiders are.
compelled to lay over some four or five
weeks to wait their turd, which'iskthe go.
