, :,Colored Men as Noters in the .sinkthern
States.
• The Albany (Georgia), Hews, a ernocrat
ic jontxua; wrote after the recent election in
kicorgia, and -the Atlanta , intelkoeneer,
' , another democratic journal;: copied without
a sign of disapprovel,, the, following reflect- -
thins upon the results of lids • first election in
;that
s tate in which the cOlored men voted :`
• "Early in the canvass we appealed to the
white people of 'Middle and Upper , Georgia
save Southern and Southwestern Georgia
' from the ' horrible fate that threatened.
• Heavyinajorities for :radicalism' were riatu
, rally' expected from the 'black belt,' and for
the same reasons that induced' this convic
tion, the white settlements were expected to
go denmeratie. .We ,are, astonished at.the
•- reversal of this natural order of thingS,
feel so keenly the deep disgrace - and sting
ing humillation i — that we dare not indulge
our inclination to write." • • •
"At one time we entertained a purpose to
change our base, in the event of radical sue.
cess, and seek repose among the white peo in -
ple a different portion or the State; but
the developmenis of the, election have fast
ened upon our mind the conviction that the
negro is it better'man than the white scale
, . wag, and that we should 'suffer by the
change. There seems to be as mielipohticad
virtue and integrityy, among the colored people
of Southwestern Georgia,l as exists among a
large p ortion
. of whites in Afiddia and Upper
Georgia, and we proudly assert that th_ey
are safer custodians of Ihe franchise. :Bre
see no reason longer to oppose negro suffrage.
We are'disposed to make him a voter in or :. der to rescue the State from carpet-baggers
and scalawags." '
A Considerable number of white Geor
gians, it seems, voted the Republican ticket,
says the New York -Post,;while a number of
the blacks voted with the, democrats; and
thereupon follow these words of the demo
cratic writer. • It - would seem then, that the
true qualification for a Voter is that he . shall
vote the democratic ticket. •
But the;adinisidou of the Albany Yews is
,
important, because it - shows that in Georgia
the two parties are already ; ; divided upon
other issues thin that of color. • .
Democratic PrOgress in England,

elicit the subjoined commentaty, from a co

"The people of England, and-the House
as representing them, have deternun' ed to go
on with that peae, efrd but thorough' .revolu
, thin to which the victory of the Union in
our civil -war gave the first impubie, and
- which hits. gathered strength with everx
cent political event; until it is now irresista
ble. Even tfte liberals console .themselves,
under the huthillatiot - burden of agovern
- meat of Obstruction and' without principle,.
on-the ground that this:revolution is inevit
able, and
..indeed more than half emote
-plished; andthat not even a tory ministry
can do anything to affect the result. Thus
• the Pali ...Mall . Gazette of May. 4th says, in
language which,. even one year ago, would
have seemed insane, -but-which now ex
presses the fixed convictions of the people:
'Almost all - the old questions of principle
haVe been' or are in a &ir way to be decided.
:That England is and must be virtually a
democracy, with all Abet that -involves, is a
proposition. which nothing but ignorance or
folly can dispute, and there is very , little
' doubt as to the sort, of things - which are in
cluded tallier that general ,
• phrase. In so
far as that conclusion is accepted and ac
quiesced in,-the great debate' which has so
long divided t,henatitra into'two camps is at
an end, and ttte neceSsityfor party govern
' merit'which anise from , it is also • 'mat'

The Administration passes into the hands
