OFFICE OF THE PITTSBUBOH GAZETTE,
WEDNESDAY, June 3, 1868.
'.,Gold remains firm at from 139% to 140%;
the market'closed active at the latter fig
ure. The iinporte'of merchandlie are in
creasing, whilst the exports; remain at the
low figures of last week. The demand for
United States bonds in Europe is merely
speculative, and mainly engineered by, a
clique of brokers firms in New York, Lon
don and Frankfort, in the absence of any
other business. The actual investment de.
mand for government bonds either here or
abroad is not any larger than before. A
State is no better off than any private in
dh'idual; the credit at home must by A No.
1 before it can be established abroad or
ebde it will have ne.duration. We are
pricisely in that position now, with gold at
loix,, and weekly imports that exceeds the
exports by nearly five million dollars in
our currency is certainly a poor recom
mendation for any nations credit, and still
speculators insist that United States bonds
will advance sufficiently to make them
eq a
Ito par, in gold here. If this will ever
ha pen
pen during the present generation, then
A in Smith and John Stuart Mills havo
wasted their energies for nothing, and all
practical men have become a set of idle
dreamers.
Government bonds were rather dull and
lower to-day; the fluctuations yesterday
were within one per cent., and to-day the
market closed weak, with decidedly more
offers to sell than to buy.
IStocks are lower, and the , less is said
about them the better. The dullness of
business in general has . produced in all
the inlands towns a class of speculators,
who are as such the most dangerous ele
'ent in the community for the re-estab
lishment of iinproved credit among the
business community in general, and that of
financiers'a establisned ieputation in par
ticular. '' '
Cashier
Business is dull, and money is scarcer_
at fioni 8 to 9 per cent. for good parties.

CRUDE—The market is quiet and while
there is apparently a little-firmer feeling,
there is next to nothing doing, and prices,
as yet; are without quotable_ change. We
have but a single 'sale to report, 300 bbls
for immediate deliveri, at 10}6c, bbls to be
returned; quotationa -may' be' fairly given
at 1034 c offered, and 11c asked, and as we
have already stated, little or nothing do
ing. The offerings continue comparatively
light, and the stock of,spot oil in this mar
-ket is pretty well reduced, and besides, it
is in the hands of specUlators, who, being
men of ample means, are able to hold un
til they can get their 'price. Of to ,
Years' ,
the margin, has been so small that small,
dealers have, by - shier_ force of circum- •
stances, been compelled to retire from the..
business and seek other , avocations. There - -
was attire when money could be, made by .
handling small quantities, but - that 'day
seems to have passed.
REFIIs-ED—The market for bonded oil
was also a shade firmer,to-day, which may
be attributed to the itnproVed' Chanoter of
the advices from Atkirwerm as yet, how
ever, the only improvement noticeable-s a
slightly increased deurmd, as, prices, com-
Tared with yesterdaY, are but little, if any;
better. We can report a sale of 1,000 bbla
for• immediate delivery at 28c, and 3,000
bbls, in lots, for the last half of Stine, at
'2,8%c. July:-Iti the;aliseride of ' sales, -may
be. quoted at 29e, and August at 29y 4 c
to 30c. '
