OFFICE or THE PITTSBHBOH GAZETTE,
SATURDAY, May 23, 186%1 1 - ,
The gold market shows a remarkable
steadiness; the quotations to -day have been
139%, without any ` - variation Whatever.
The shipments of, specie to Europe haye
been again as heavy as the week before;
three million dollars, which were, covered
by California shipments of , half a.milllon
for priVate parties, and a like mount for
the 'United States Treasury—the balance
had to come from the reserve. ,fit almost
any Other time prior to this, this enoi 7
mons export would have caused apprelten
along and induced people to buy on specu
lation fora rise, but the stagnation of busi
ness and the fear that the Govern
ment ' might sell its large reserve
prevents parties from buying at present.
Taking our political status in considera
tion, the premium should decline the mo
ment any reliable estimate could be made
of oar next crops; but fair prospects will
lead to heavier importations which ope
rates like a check against any decline.
Government bonds remained barely
.steady; the excitement to buy and hold for
prices is evidently over, au(l
on a
care
tamination of the 'records of the
markets
e last seven .years it will be
found that w
ver prices of governments

large supply frmte the for has covered
all that the market wo'ula-,,,, 4 k e . - i n v i e w ,

contracts for future 'delivery h ave b een
made by parties who have the tk..... mt to
put prices up or put them down, and if its
to their advantage to see the market low
er, they can put it down 2 or 3 per cent. As
an investment at present prices, bonds will
scarcely yield More than 6 per cent.
Stocks^ are firm; all 'eastern shares are
improving; Fort Wayne keeps up close to
110, which it had touched yesterday;
Cleveland it Pittsburgh, Rock Island and
the North Western shares are firm, but
dealings are light. In Bank, and Insurance
stocks little is • done, and our Railroad se
curities are not in demand, in fact are very
dif f icult to plaCe at, any.price.
Money is tightening up again, although
business is dull, and 10 to 12 per cent is
paid for all' well secured obligations, en
cept at bank,, where a fair balance is
kept.

CRUDE—The .Crude mhiket has bee,
comparatively quiet during.the past week
and subject to but very slight " fluctuatik.
in value, and the, sales, in the aggrega ,
have been unusually small. In the eat
part of the week business was very di
and to effect sales, holders were obliged ?
make a slight concession. Since the:
however, under the influence of report'
that the then expected "corner" '

to be a - success the market stiffened

months; from July to December, wit/

month, sold at 12c. There is a fair :truant
of oil in this market at present,` estimate - .
in round numbers at three hundred thot'
sand narrels, but the great : portion of • thli
it should be borne in mind, is in the hand
of refiners and - Speculators, so that th., -
quantity of oil really in. the hands of legiti:

REFINED—There has been, consideratat
excitement in the Market ftir bonded ,011
this week, occasioned by an expected neat?
ner," which was to haVei Occurred onThurs
day or Friday,- bat which,•according to th
tenor of our advices to-day', was, to say I.v
least, a partial failure. It would ivyf
that all of our refiners who had 14 .
"called" promptly .responded to the
by having their;oil on hand at thereat
time and we learn that when delivere -
Vra Bjust as promptly paid - for. The
ties who called, we have no doubt, the:
that many of Clio sellers would not be
to deliver, and in that event'
a they, v 4
advance the price of spot oil ti , 3sc.,,peri
40c, and make the poor refiner pay the . ,
ference, and this is what "cortierers".ll
after; it was the little differences they
after, not the • oil, but, unfortnhatel,Y
them, the& got all the oil and ne - difl
ences. To-day, it was said that 280 was to
best, offer for , spot ell, though there wel e
no sellers below 30 to 31e, and so far as.
could learn, there were no sales. Now 4 -5301
the *agony" is over, we'areilu. hopes - Qt . /
business will improve,,and that dt• will
more legitimate and`less speculative. f
