The Wheeling (West Virginia) Intelli
gence,. devotes over a column , to Senator
Nan Winkle, from which we extract the
following:
_To all his other Offences Mr. Van Win
kle has added the blackest ' ingratitude. It
was the party.- upholding the great Cause
which he now stabs like an assassin, that
gave West Virginia leave to place two men
on the floor of the United States Senate;
and the spokesman th at party who plead
for us then and .there was . Benjamin P.
Wade:: Now our loyal, •Representatives. at
Washington are overwhelmed' with the re
proaches of the Republicans in both Houses,
whose confidence in West Virginia loyalty
is almost destroyed. - - That. for these men
five years ago,WestVyginia would to-daV

ginia, governed like her by the sword. . et
Van Winkle bad riearcely warmed' his seat
in the. Senate before he bvur to show his
.antipathy to. heir principles, and his hatred
to the men who alone have ever befriended
us. But the crowning act of treachery and
malignity was reserved for this crisis, cho
sen by him and his coadjutors with the be
lief that the llfe`of the organization they
sought to destroy might be taken at a single
blow. _Whatever men may say of. Fessen
den or Grimes, or any one else, their con
duct is as fair as the sun , compared with
_that of Van Winkle, who seems tohave been
dead to.every sentiment of honor orgrati
tude or duty tab's people or, his friends. ,
