but seventy per cent., may not speak high
for the financial condition of a country, but
our riches in the products of the soil Will
enable us to pay a high interest and stave
off payment for a few years. ,
Gold is weak and. dull with little doing;
the market is without any speculative pur
.chasers, and sellers at higher rates will
prefer to await further developments be
fore covering. - It is likely that the market
will be in this condition until after the Chi
cago Convention is over.
In stocks, there . was .a remarkable Wea
kness in Express stocks, and it seems as if
that once so much coveted property had al
together come to distrust with the people
as an investment.
Money is easy at Bto 10 per cent. for en
dorsed paper; sight names will "not be
taken for less than 12 to 15 per'cent. Busi

whether they are presented for payment
or; not. 'Most of these notes' are in the
hinds of the national banks. They have
been held as a lawful money 'reserve for
deposits, and in this capacity have done
very profitabie service. The three per cent.
certificates which the United States' Tress

compounds can, to a certain extent, be ad
vantageously held by our banks as lawful
money reserve. There tiro" about twenty-
two millions of these three per cent., avail,

banks which present the notes in season
can secure glem if they so wish.. Many of
the.hanks are already sending in the com

FINANCE AND TRADE
- OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
MOrcnair, May 18, 1868:
Financial matters were very dull to-day,
partly on account of the inclemency of the
weather, but more on account of the un
settled condition of the future policy of the
Governraint as regards the:Anther issues
of paper circulation. It seems as if the
English people had construed the acquittal
. of, the President, so far as it went, as being
favorable to an early settlement of all our
internal troubles, and are likely, to con
tinuetto invest in our uational securities.
The fact itself of selling our promises to
pay at an early day in specie what realizes

311 r AND LAMB&
There was a I. oderate supply of Sheep
and Lambs t. y, and with a continued
steady demand,4he market ruled firm,and
Prices, compared with last week, were well
sustained. Notsithstanding the offerings
were a little larger , than -usual, so far as
we could learnlithere were none left over
unsold, there being, it appeart; , "attiod de;
mend for all thiildifferent kinds in market.
It is probable that the extreme prices for
cattle has a tendency to increase the de
mand for SheeWand we are surprised, un
der the circuniaf„ances, that consumers do
not buy more nituton and less beef.
Gibson wholetialed 68 head, averaging 76
lbs. to Emerick;itt Co., at 634 to 7.
Beeler reports having sold 70 head of
Butler Co. Lams at $2 to 83,50 per head.
Garwin it Co. Xeport having sold 103 head
at, sy, to 6Nc Iper pound for Sheep, and
Lambs at an average of 42,75 per head.
I. Humes - retorts having sold 14 head
of course Wooled! Sheep, from Beaver Cp.,
at 6y,; and 26 head of nice fat Lambs at $4,
per head.
Emerick & Co4retailed 68 head of Ohio
Sheep at 6, 1 ,4'115.7 t ,' _-
There is little or nothing doing in this
class of stock at. ;these vards. The extreme
prices has a tenilency to restrict the de
mand, which at Kest, is always very light
at this season of Ihe.year.: Quotations may
be fairly given a, 0 to lie, as to quality and
condition. II
