two boats, and 90,000 bushels of coal for
Louisville, and the Whale, with ten barges
and 100,000 bushels of coal for Cincinnati,
departed yesterday. •

legheny at that point and at a stand.
Private advices report that Capt. Stock
dale's boat, the "Sallie," arrived at Fort I
Sully on April 29th. She had not moved
or lightened any freight up to that time.
River low and falling; but channel cutting
out; five boats had passed Sully ahead of
the Sallie;as follows: Deer Lodge, 10th,
Cora, 13th, Success and Nile, 18th, and
Only Chance on the 18th. The Sallie had
passed eleven boats up to that time, as fol
lows: Antelope, Henry Adkins, Hunts
ville, Ida Stockdale, Mountaineer, Octavia,
Columbia, St. Luke, Miner, Benton and
Peninah. •
The same letter also says: I do think
the Sallie and 'a few otlier boats will get
through, but I do not believe that one-half
of the boats that have arum will see Ben

• Lake Erie by canal is a measure now en
tertained by the Pennsylvania Legislature.
A communication adthessed to a leading
Senator of that body declares
"The Ohio river cannot be said to be
fully improved until its natural extension
is improved—untli, indeed, it shall be con
nected with lake Erie. Ido not think that
nature ever intended that the two great
internal lines of navigation on this conti
nent, the one debauching into the Gulf of
St. Lawrence, anti the other Into the Gulf
: of Mexico, should remain forever uncon
nected. The physical geography country
is full of hints for connections of these
grand thoroughfares. Thus, Lake Michi
gan; may very easily be connected with the
Northern Upper Bibislssippi •by•means of
several depressions crouirt the interven-•
ing 'country; and thus the Ohio or the east
ern _Upper Mississippi . , may be also con
nected-with lake Erie." • ' •
