The Religion of Abyssinia. , Abyst has had a nA Christian Church since theda ys of Athnnus, who sent a mission fro Alexandria. of which he was Bishop, •in the :'year" 385 of our era. The Abyssinian Christian creed is substantially that'of the Greek Church. It enjoins also many Jewish 'observances, such as circum cision, tabernacle service, Sabbath (not Sunday) observance and abstinence from blood and from pork. Baptism, the Com munion, Lent and fasting on Wednesdays and Fridays, are strictly observed. Abys sinia is the,. Switzerland of Africa, and its churches, of which almost every village has one though no better:than a barn or cowhouse in style, are always placed ins commanding position, surrounded by the fine trees of the country, the candelabra tree, flower ing aloe, the myrtle, the mimosa, the bamboo, the cedarand the fern. In each church is a sacred enclosure into which no bribes can even secure the admis sion of any save the'priests. In this are preserved the manuscript Bibles, written in the old •Ethiopic characters and freely illus trated in a very rude way. One of these illustrations represents God creating man, holding Adam and Eve by' the hand, while a number of human heads are fiistributed about, 'all "after , his own image." The Abyssinian Bible is said.to contain a writ ing not included in our Scriptures, the Book of Henock. Within recent times rude ar tists have abundantly adorned the Abysin ian churches With pictures. One of these, and one of the most remarkable, in which the crossing of the Red Sea Is represented, shows the host of. Pharaoh holding Abys sinian match-locks high - above their heads. The number of priests is enormous. When Gondar was the capital it had forty-four 'churches, and every one of these had above three bundled priests or deacons. They are black,.f course, or dark brown, but all:.al& - religlooP .kictwea represent the saintsin heal= as ot-_, pure white skin, and clad in red and yellow dressing gowns. z..1...i- , !:IPOLaT'IC4g..;. r4ir'CONGLRESIS .
