FINANCE. AND TRADE
FFICE OF 'PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
- TUESDAY, May 12, 186$. S
The probability of the President's ac
quittal gave rise to a very bearish feeling
in the gold market, whilst it must be 'con
ceded that neither acquittal nor conviction
would change our Comniercial relations to
• foreign countries. On the favorable trade
balance the value of. the precious metal'in,
relation to 'paper cirettlation must'depend.
A present there is nothing unfavorable to
our foreign balance; the imp9rts, have de
creased, a limited demand - for flour and
grain has set in, and the increased value of
cotton and petrolehm may-be said to bh a
fair offset for our' imports of Imiuries. ' The
heavy shipments of specie for the past week
have been hastened on for fear a 'rise in the.
premium of gold might take place, but a
reverse in the quotations, the demand for
shipment:hasceased, and exchange may be
offered again below the gold Shipping point.
A very importantlitem in our foreign trade
balance is the unusual large amounts of
coin carried out by pleasure seekers, which.
is much larger this season, despite the de
pression in trade, than • most people im
i agine. Those who go strictly for pleasure,
I and, returns, perhaps, have not increased
I - in numbers, but a considerable element of
the productive classes take their savings
I out, and
. remain abroad until trade _and
commerce is more flourishing.
In government bonds there is but little
doing, although the money marlrat Is 'easy,-
people will not invest at present high quo
tations, and when the foreign demand for
bonds ceases, votations are lit:elf - to be
lowered. .
In stacks but little is doing, the railroad
shares are unsettled, and express stocks
are lower; the practice of watering express
shares has brought these .securities In dis
credit athong trie"prilflie.
Moseyis easy, and on first-class names
can be had from 8 to 10 liter „
