Geo. W. Reed, is filling up rapidly for St.
Louis, and Will be the first boat out for
that point. •
The convention of stearnboatmen; Which
was to have been held at Louisville on
Monday, has been indefinitely postponed.
The towboat Coal City left for Cincinnati
yesterday morning, with ninet' thousand
bushels of_coal.
The Louisville Democrat, of Monday,
says: The towboat Arrow lelta-tow of coal
at West Louisville, which will be taken by
the Dick Fulton to Natchez. The Arrow
returned to Pittsburgh yesterday evening.
She will take three barges loaded with bar
rels for Pittsburgh at Aurora.
We Clio the following items from the
Cincinnati Commercial, of Sunday: Jas..
Kelsey,, formerly whart-master at Aurora,
Indiana, who recently returned from Om
aha„last.Thursday night. Oh the follow
ing morning he was found dead in his bed.
An empty vial was found on his person la-.
beled strychnine,' indicated* that he had
committed suicide. The J. N. McCullough
returns to Pittsburgh this morning at 10
o'clock. She has all the freight she wants,
including 400 bales of hay, 90 bales of cot
ton, her • freight amounting to 300 tuns.
The Melnotte, which departed for St. Louis
last night, was full - of freight, and has a
fair trip of. people. Pilots ,MeChlin and
Puddyare.at the wheeL The Robt. Burns
goes out on a picnic excursion, to-day. This
is the first time the Burns has turned a
wheel for over one year having been laid
up in the month . of Licking river during
that period. • • '
A St. Louis telegram says: The Kate
Robinson came in from Pittsburgh this
Morning, With 1,400 kegs of nails. In land
ing, she flanked against a barge laden with
coal at the upper landing, belonging to
Bowser Murphy, knocking a hole In its
side. It had 7 feet of coal, and filled with
water over the top of the coal. The Simp
, son Horner went to its rescue, and with
syphon pumps saved the barge, charging
the Kate Robil son $l5O.
The St. Louis Republican, of Saturday,
says: The towboat Mary Davage, from
Pittsburgh, brought two barges well laden,
a portion of the cargo amounting" to nearly
300 tuns, reshitiment • to the 7-I;pper:Miesis
sippl, and will go forward by the Northern
Line. The City of Pekin, from Peoria, had
a moderate cargo of freight; but a full 'list
of passengers, and had no less than 2.00 in
the cabin when she left Peoria. The Lo
rena and Shamrock, from the Ohio, had, as
usual, heavy cargoes of manufactured ar 7 .
tidies. The Waaanita, having 'been re
paired by Fred. Sebastian, is again at the
wharf to load for Pittsburgh. ---
Capt. Henderson, of Parkersburg, has
bought a one-half- interest in the little
' steamer T. J. Pickett, and takes command
of her in Parkersburg and Zanesville
trade. .-
We clip the following from the St. Loins
Diapatch; of Saturday:.-'Business at the
wharf for the past two or three dayshas
presented a very sorrowful and '“played
our appearance., The decline Is general,
and all branches of river , commerce le de
pressed.',. Packets, that a week since pro;
sented &scene of: lifeaud activity, now re
semble Phantom . ships, with 'their decks
deserted.' ,They come and go for a matter
of appearance sake, but their - beggarly
looking trips is in striking ,contrast to the
life and bnatln'Of times when 'trade is ae.t,
tive. • We know of several boats' that, have
gone to the bone yard within the Inuit week,,
and their owners have no hopes 'of a Show
ing for at least three or four menthe. ' We
heard an old boatman remark .vesterday
that before August was over the Sberiff
would, have a good stock of steamboats; on
hand,. 'While we do .not anticipate any
thing so disastrous as that, there is, no
denying the fact that the business-on the
rivers has about null, and;what. is most dis
couraging is the entire absence of any
thing on which to base an improvemont:
For the next three months steamboat prop-,
erty will 'be poor stock; but in the fall
therd'ean hardly be a doubt that trade gen
erally will revive In a manner surpassing
any previous season for many rears. We
only hope the most sanguine , expectations
will be realized.
