popular. We know of none more atrocious
than that
.recently committed at Hampton
Falls, N. H., where an old man nearly
eighty years of age, and his wife, were bru
tally murdered with an axe and
robbed of nearly $l,OOO by a recently dis
charged laborer.
—The Cincinnati Commercial aspires to
the position of dictator. It is trying tomn
duce the Democratic party to nominate
Chief Justice Chase for president, and it also
wishes the Republican, party to refuse to
nominate Senator Wade as Vice President.
_One paper can always dictate to two parties,
lint the two parties rarely obey the dic
tation. •
—Ovens, the Philadelphia assessor, who
was prominently mixed up in the murder of
the lamented Colonel Riddle, has resigned
his office. At the time of the Colonel's
death, this man was impeached, but the trial
was delayed as much as possible,, and now,
on the receipt of his resignation, has been
dismissed altogether. Although he thus, es
caped unpUnished, he has lost his office, a
fact for which single or widowed ladies who
were tax payers in his district will be. pro
foundly tiumirful:
—Bismarck, the most polished rhetorical
swordsman in Europe, has given England
a delicate thrust with his - rapier which is
good enough to make the childrenof Albion
wince. He said if he were a Chinese, an
Ind,ian or an Abyssinian, he should proba
bly care a great deal about England, but be
ing a simple European; he doesint care at all.
England winces at every little evidence of
this sort that her glory has departed, but
does nothing to bring it back again, but
fight untutored savages.

abroad. Paris swarms with them; Rome is
beginning to empty them into Switzerland,'
and the German cities are thronged with
them. In Dresden alone there are 590 of
them spending the winter, and these are
divided into various clicitkes, which manage
to fight, talk scandal, gossip and all that sort
of thing in a remarkable degree. , All of
Abese,Americans, with a few honorable ex
ceptions, are well dressed loaferii, and when
five hundred or a thousand of that sort of
People are turned loose in a town like,Dres:
den or Florepce, the effect can be imaghied.
—One of the greatest nuisances of the
side walks now, after the protracted wash
ing and scrubbing, is their constant We as
a roadway fo; wheel-barrows. /den and
boys who are the pilots of the hand carts,
trucks, etc., seem to be fully imbued with
the idea of their own importance, and of
the utter insignificance of COMMOII foot pas
sengers. We have seen, rough men, and
growing boys trundle. their vehicles, over
,elegant dresses; we have heard them sw , t:ar
fat refined ladies and gentlemen beeauke they
would not or , could not get, uof the road of
the jligger nautical barrow; and We have, in,
such casee; looked in vain for Rolicemen.

them when there and we hope that our
newly uniformed 'and good looking police
men will act as ushers and show these in
fringers to their proper places.
