9r the Second Ward Grant Clubs, • ;
~Ptesnuult adjourinsient the l 'Sitond
ward:draft Club held a special diedieting at
their rooms, 14." 66 Smithfield skeet, last
evening, Thomas Steel, Esq.,. presiding
Mr. Ewing, from' the OmMnittee apptantefl,
,
to wait on 001 ., Phillips and request hies, on
behalf oftheßepublicane of the ward , to be
.
eome a candidate for nomination for'Con
.
gress by the fortheoteing Conventien,
ported that he , had 'replied that fie would
not enter - into any 1 oddest' for
nomindiein er solicit t; but;if the Repub.
liean OM:mention shmild nominate him he
- would net feel at liberty to decline, but
would accept and go to work in earnest for
a suocessful compfign . ..
Vol. Phillips being 'Present, Stated that
the report presented by Mr. Ewing did not
fully express'his answer to the Committee,
bat rather changed its - Meaning. He bad
given the subject careful consideration, and
while, it nominated by the Convention
without his'selicitation heweadd-not feel at
liberty to• decline the honor, 'still he would
ask leave
,to withdraw the report of the
Committee, and keep out of the canvassea
tirely. He was prepared to warmlytmite
in the support of any candidate put fir
ward •by the ConventiOn. Beal&s, be
thought his nomination, secured through
' the efforts of his friends, at this late stag e
of the canvass might excite discard te.
ranks of the party, Either of the candiz
dates now prominent was worthy suppbrt;
and he would go in to help to give one or
the other a large majority.
Under the circumstances, Mr. Steel
thought it perhaps desirable that the re.
quest of Col. Phillips be complie d with.
Mr.• Keeler moved that the request of
Colonel Phillips to withdraw hiS answer to
the committee be granted. There were cer
tain principles to be observed" in a cam
paign, and one was that it was not best to
change the front in the'presence of the ene
my. He thought' that under the circum
stances the club had better act asrequested.
Me.sszs. Mathews, Aiken, Ewing, 'and
<tilers, addressed the meeting, when the
report of the Committee was withdravm
and Colonel Phillips' declination accepted:
On motion of T H. Phelps, Esq.; the

Captured a Canary. - •
J. C. Clark, proprietor of the "White Cot
tage," at Perrysville, made information be-.
•
fore Alderman 111cMasters, yesterday,'
,
charging 'Major A. 13. Munroe with lareeny .
by bailee. It appears that. the - Major was
•on a visit to Perrksville a few days since
when it seems the proprietor Was absent
.froinheme, ,and he took a great fancy to a
canary he discovered in a cage at the afore
said place, the ;in:Ted - y/of , Mr. Clark, and
by some means got possession of It, -we
know not how,-but it must have been legal
ly or.the prosecution would have been for
larceny. When Mr. Clark returned home
he made inquiry regarding his bird and
was informed that the. Major had taken it .
with him. He called upon him for the bird
and cage but the gallant Major refused to
give it up, hence the information. He was
arrested, and after a hearing a commitment
made out and given to the constable, but
rather than be caged himself he • agreed to
give up the caged bird, and in a few mo
ments after the prosecutor and defendant
came into the office together, the former
carrying the page and bird and requested
that the prosecution be with, drawn, which
the Alderman very properly consented to,
and the prisoner was , discharged. •

it nes been kept free of all useless compli

it claims to make but-one kind of stitch,

Hence the machine may run constantly fqr
