FINANCE AND
OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
THURSDAY, May 7, 18138.
Gold, under - the excitement of the unset
tled state of the impeachment questifin, was
held very firm to-day, at 13.934 .:to 139%,
closing at the inside figure. There is a dis
position among timid people to hold gold
for higher quotations, although specula
tors are not yet disposed to buy largely.
The impression among the mere conserva
tive men in Wall street that the effect of a
conviction of the President will be tem
porary, and the prices of neither gold nor
Government securities will suffer any Ma
terial change. In bonds there was more
Inquiry for old Five-Twenties of 1862 and
1861, and Consols, which were quoted , a
shade lower than other desc:riptions..
Seven-Thirties keep down since the Assist
ant Treasurer buys but very limited
amounts at a trifle below the street quota
tions. It was generally expected that after
the May payments there would be a gene
ral rise in Government bonds, but the mar
ket for money has been stiff at seven per
cent. for call loans, so there is little induce
ment to buy. The payment of the May
compound interest notes, however, will in
crease the amount of the assets of National
banks to the amount of 19 40-100 per cent.
on their compound interest notes held as.
reserve, which enables them to expand
their loans over five million dollars, and
cause an easy money market.
In Railroad stocks there was a firm feel
ing manifested to bold on for higher prices.
All the. Western shares advanced yester
day, and were well sustained to-day, and
some of the Express shares have improved;
also, Quicksilver.
Money is firmer here with but little of
fering to invest except in small amounts.
Business keeps up rather liyply, and with
the rise in-the Allegheny River, a brisk
time is expected at the Allegheny wharf.
Closing quotations as • received by . Ph.S.
Mertz, were as follows:
Gold, 139%; 1881 bonds, 1134; 1862 5-20 s,
108;4; 18134 do, 106%; 1865 do, 107; Consols,
109; 10-i05,"1.03; 7-30 s: 1073{ 3 .

—A New York paper of Tuesday says:
H. J. Messenger, anker, Nor 22 * Nassau
street, has this morning notified his credi
tors that he is unable to meethispayinents.
Mi. Messenger has had extensive connec
tions with the interior of the State, and his
failure is said to hifve arisen from his hav
ing, for some time past, "carried" certain
houses in the grain trade. He is president
of the. Bank of Ontario, Cananda*ue, of-the
Bank of Canton and of H. J. Messenger's
Bank at .Cortland; all State institutions.
Usually, Mr. Messenger has held a large
amount of private deposits...
• =The Chicago Tribune; of Wednesday - ,
reports money matters, in . this city as fol
lows: There was rather more aniinationin
financial circles to-day,:and the' demand
for money was lower, growing out of the
increased Speculative movement and uP
ward tendency in, the grain -markets.
There was also more commercial paper
offering, and, generally speaking . , the feel
ing at the banks was better than it has been
at any time, within the past wesk or tea
days. Money continues easy, and;borrow
ers in good standing experience no
ditfi
-culty whatever in negotiating loins. On
call the market is dull at 7to 8 per cent.
on Governments. On miscellaneous pro
duce collaterals - there is no' change in the
rate. • ' '
The same paper also says: The whisky
"ring" has recently acquired sonic new
deviees.for escaping the 54:1.,430ed vigilance
lof the officers. Alcohol is being 'daily im
ported into this city from New York•in tin
cans holding from five to ten gallons each.
, These are built almost square, and fitted
I . closely in a packing box. The entire pack
age is then shipped as hardware.;,
An
' other way is to make "slack" casks, into
Which a whisky barrel, will snugly fit.
Thee; inner barrel is filled with alcohol,
then placed in the "cask" and the package
marked "hinges" or "cutlery." This con
traband alcohol is selling at $3 to $3,25 per,
gallon, which is lower than the illicit man
ufactures in the neighborhood can afford
take. Hence the local business , in alcohol
