A negro on the plantation of George B.
Holmes Esq., bought some calico a few
days ago and got a negro woman to make
it into a spread 'for her bed. When it was
made and slept under for the first time, the
owner beciune sick, and suspicion of conju

conjurer blew her breath three times in the
middle of the spread. The excitement on
the' plantation was intense. On Sunday
the - spread was brought out and solemnly
burned in-the presence of several thousand

plantation is in a high state of excitement
and no work is done.—Montgoniery Mail.

LE FOLLET says that the spring styles

Snow in the Sierra Nevada. . .
1 .
The Buffalo Cenimeiciat Adrertisee nuotes,
from a letter
.
"We are now getting ready to oven our.
line frOm Cisco to the Summit (18 Miles).
The snow on that portion of the track - which
was laid last fall, averages about 10 feet in
depth. We have, about .108 Chinamen at;
work now trenching it out, and .expect to
increase the force. t 0 ,1,000 during 'the Week:
We shall, after trenching; it, leave' it for a
few days for the sun to operate upon,: when
1 we' shall, put one of the, large' snow- .
Plows with eight of our." large erigines be
hind it, and propose then to make quick
work of it. I never saw (to speak of)
until I came here. ...In the valley we are
having comfortably warm weather. , Tke
flowers are in blossom-;—in fact flowers are
in blossom here ' all the year round.' The.
Plains to the - base of the mountains are cov
ered with the lovely wild flowers you
1
ver saw, and are' very fragrant; and yet,
Within sixty miles, we find snow on an av
erage ten feet, deep on the level ! I came in
off the road to-day, and while the train was
waiting on a side track, made two of the
most beautiful bouquets you can imagine.
This is decidedly a great country, and bar
ring the , accommodations , a delightful
country for the tourist or pleasure seeker."
IT is only few
_years _ago, in England
and Prance, that the waste caused by the
dust of bituminous. coal .began to attract at
tention.and- means were sought to prevent
it. A? process wag discoveredby which the
dust was mixed witl. Some bitumindus sub
stance, and 'pressed into locks, Which were
used as fuel 'and with . Notwith
standing the comparatively :low, Airiee of
coal, the operation proved a: practical and
financial success, : and- ; to-day in Europe
many thousand tons of coal dustare workei
up into blocks, to burn under stationary,
locomotive and marine boilers. They poss
ess this advantage—that' being of uniform
size and weight, the fire • can be regulated
with much accuracy; and owing to their
compactness 'closer storage is practicable,
and thus a steamer or locomotive can carry
a much greater supply of fuel than under
the old system. The success of the system
has opened a market for the hitherto almost
useless coal dust.
A SPRlGirrix writer expresses his opinion
of: old maids in the following manner : "I
em inclined to think that many of the sati
rical aspersions cast upon old maids tell
.more to their credit than is generally imag
ined. Is.a woman remarkably neat in her
person? She will certainly be an old maid.
Is she particularly reserved toward the other
sex? She has all the squeamishnesS of an
old maid. Is she frugal in her expenses,
and exact in her domesticconcerns?* She is
cut out for an old maid. And if she be hu
mane to the animals about her, nothing can
save her from the appellation of an old maid.
In short, I have aTways found that neatness,
modesty, economy, and humanity are the
never-failing characteristics of that terrible
creature-=‘ old maid."
TIM Bishop of Argle tells several stories

"Drink and let the camels drink also." It
