OFFICE OF. THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
TiIEgDAY, May 5, 1868.
The gold market exhibits signs of de
pression;rthe market began to get weak
with tbo increase of cash gold offered to
loan, and speculative buyers keeps the mar
ket down to its legitimate demand which
is light after the payment of Five Twen
ties coupons to foreign holders. The prob
ability_ of the - :Prisidant's -may
stimulate purchasers for a rise, but the
market will back the support from the
speculative iinporters who were the main
cause of the speculative fluctuations.
Governments were rather weak, and
with the downward tendency of gold' and
the tightening of the money market, are
likely to take a slight downward turn be
fore the approach of the /lily efchanges of
Seven Thirties, when, in allprobability, a
large amouht of bonds will - be offered for
sale in preference to .conversion. When
New York dealers in government securi
ties caused the friends and the public in
general to exchange their Seven Thirties,
they do it as much for the sake of the pub
lic as for their own: they will not be able
to furnish bonds fast enough and do not
care for them in at high rates, when it is
doubtful that they can get their outlay
back again.
The stock market is firm; with little do
ing: outside of the regular speculators litlte
is bought for investment, the market being
too high to count on safe returns. In local
securities little will be done until after
dividends have been paid.
Dioney seems to be (=ler, except in the
way for small sums to supply the wants of
the middle trades-people and property
owners, who bought part_ cash and part
short payment. Businesa is slUggish, but
premises to iniprove.

—The directors of the Pennsylvania
road Company have declared the usual'
cash dividend of three per cent. and a stock
dividend of five per cent. out of the earn
ings of the company for the last six month,
both of which-are payable to stockholders,
clear of national - and State tax, after the
30th of the present month. This is equal
to sixteen per Cent. on tile par value of the
stock, thus showing it to beone of the best,
if not the very best investment in the coun
try.
—Eighty-tiro fullhoils of insurance capi
tal met in Council at Chicago recently, and
by a vote of sixty-seven millions against
fifteen millions, it was decided to dispense
hereafter with all the aid of Solicitors in
obtaining risks, and to await business as It
offered at their respective desks. The sav

and the offices confine their dealieg to
proper and legitimate limits.

interest at 7_ per cent., and twelve miilfons
of 5-10 bonds, drawing interest at - 8 per

sth inse., will show a decrease of .'the. same
of $6,000;000 or 510,000;000, whiehli the hea
viest decrease for some time past. During
the month of April the expenditures on ac
count of the various departments of the
Government, especially the War Depart-,
ment, which is generallY very heavy, have
been much less than usual; while•the re
ceipts frctm customs bave.been heavy
and the receipts from Internal Revenue
about the same as usual. The amount of
coin now on hand is over $84,0001000; be
sides $23,000,000 in currency: During ;the
month several millions of dollars in gold
have been sold, as there was more coin on
hand than was needed to meet the require
