—lt is stated that every one of the two
hundred unmarried females who were some
time ago shipped to the Pacific coast is now
married and has a home. This shows what
a little fenuele,enterprise,may do.
- —David Sniat has ieCenily , been elected
Burgoniaster of York, Thia small man
is the same who walked seven miles one
day to surrender that borough to Leeolur
ing his invasion of this State in 1863. .
—Mr. Seward is going on an extended
foreign tour if, the impeachment results in
conviction. It has been suggested that he
will endeavor to find out, if •possible, where
some of his recent purchases are located:
—Within the past twenty-five years there
have been but nine months of April in,
which there were no snow storms, and yet
everyone seems to look upon each recur
ring April snow as a not able phenomenon,
—An old German who came to this
country in his eightieth year, celebrated in
St. Louis, on the 14th instant, - his 100th
birth day , anniversary. How many cords
of wood he can chop per daY is not stated.
—Genentd Rosseaa, it is said, has arrived
at Omaha, on his way from Oregon to swear
at the Impeachment trial, but he comes too
late. Like some things in the history of
Miss Muller, he might have been but he
wasn't.
—Charles Heade and Dion Boueicault are
quarreling over Foul Play. The latter
wants to have it produced immediately as a
drama., and the great author prefers to allow
it to be finished before it be brought out on
the stage.
—The crowd of visitors is much larger
now at the White Home than it has been
for some time before. When Barnum an
nounced in large letters, "last meek of the
what is it, " people thronged to get a last
look at the nondescript.
—.A new mode of torture has been discov
ered in British India. A thin bag of live
wasps is fastened to the bare stomach of the
tortured, and then the insects are stirred up.
It is said to be infinitely worse than being
laid on a cotton carding machine, with some
one dancing the tan can on your back.
—Mr. Higginson writes in a London
magazine upon American popular lecturers,
and says of Gough, that he ist - sort of evan
gelical comedian—the idol of many worthy
people who never saw good acting on any
other stage. He is a favorite with many
others who can tolerate his contortions for
the sake of his drollery.
—A very absurd report is prevalent about
Mr. George Peabody -giving the Pope
$1;000,000. It is not likely that Mr. Pea
body would, give this much money to any
one man even if he were a Roman Catholic,
which he is not, and it certainly does not'
seem to be consistent with the practice of
the Pope to accept anything as a gift from
heretics. •
—Erie is at last agitating the idea of
making that delightful city into a place of
summer resort. In all the country there is
no place which has more attractions. It is
now proposed to erect a new hotel and a
row of bathing houses on the peninsula, and
several elegant pleasure boats have been
built. The hotels in Erie are already very
fine and of large capacity.
—The House Committee on Commerce
has agreed to recommend the appropriation
of fifty thousand liollars for the improve-.
ment of the barb'''. at Erie. This is all
very well as far as it goes, but it is a mere
drop in the bucket. A sufficient appropri
ation well expended Would make Erie (the
only lake harbor of Pennsyvania t ) the
finest harbor on the great lakes.
