Both rivers continue to recede steadily at this point with seven feet in the Alle gheny and six feet three inches in the Mo nongahela. The weather yesterday was Clear and pleasant, and all that could pos sibly be desired for the transaction of. 'out .door business. There were no arrivals aside from the regular packets: The Glendale, from St. Mats; Kate Robinson, from Louisville, and'Argosy, from Cincinnati, are due here to-day, and the St. Charles, from Cincin nati, may be expected in this evening. Messrs.-Ghriest Raslett, agents for the St. Charles, receive freight for her at foot of Wood street to-day. The Tielli3vernon left for St. Louis about noon yesterday, with an excellent trip, having about about all the freight she could take, and a large number of pas-. sengers. The Alice V. left for St. Louis last even ing. She did not have much of a trip from here; but has engagements below, inelad leg eight thousand kegs of nails at Wheel ing. The New State also cleared with oily a moderate trip, but she, too, will doubtless fill out at Wheeling and other points be -low. The towboat Storm, which le ft here on Thuesday with four earges of coal in two foi. lake Erie, lying at Steubenville, sunk two of them at White Ripple. Shortly after this accident, the Coal Bluff ran a barge loaded with railroad lien on the sunken coal barges, and it also went down. STEAMER .1. N. MCCULLOUGH. —This splendid side-wheeler will leave tot:lay at noon on her first trip in the Cincinnati packet trade. She is in all respects one of the finest and most' commodious steamers that comes to this - port, and is especially adapted for a , packet trade, being, fast, of light draught, and supplied with all the modern improvements and appliances to render comfort, safety and convenience. Her officers are well-known and popular steamboat men; the Captain, George D. Moore, and the clerk, his brother Dan, are known at every town and almost every house along the river between here and Parkersburg, and have always borne the reputation of being high minded and hon orable men. Passengers and shippers will bear in mind that she leaves promptly on time, 12 M. Attention is directed to the card of Messrs. Gluiest Jr Haslett, steamboat agents, corner of Market and Water streets. These gen tlemen are the authorized agents of the Northwestern Union Packet Company, be tween St. Louis and St. Paul; and St. Louis and:Quincy Packet Co., and as such, are prepared to receipt through freight by either of the above lines at the lowest rates. Messrs. G. de IL are also agents for steamers loading for Cincinnati and Louis ville, Memphis. New Orleans, and all other points oo the Western Rivers. The Lorena, Capt. Sam Shuman, is now In turn for St. Louis, and will be the first passenger boat out. The , Ida Rees, 'Capt. Rees - Rees, is tie regular packet for Oil City today, leaving promptly at four p. m. The Mary Daviige Barges,Capt. Hugh Campbell, are filling up steadily, and will soon be ready to clear for St. Louis. The Maggie Hays, Capt. B. C. .Martin] is expected to leave for St. Louis and the Up per Mississippi to-morrow; if not, she will take" her departure on Saturday with Out fail. The Kate Putnam and St. Charles left Cincinnati for Pittsburgh on Monday. The St. Patrick recently burned opposite Memphis is insured in Cincinnati offices for ae.• &NI, The Cincinnati Insurance Companies leave been remarkably unfor tunate this year, while on the other hand, our Pittsburgh offices have got off almost "scot-free." A letter to Captain Kountr, says of the steamer Carrie, recently sunk near Stens City: - I fear that she is settling is the sand, and l have no doubt but that she is total loss. 'E e have saved some freight, an are doing we can to save more. The struck r in the stern; . a little to the starboard side and aft the forward hatch. She sunk in about twelve, minutes. Sh is now badly settled amidships. The little steamer Spray 'as sold by the *United, States Marshal at Cincinnati on Monday to Captain Vince t Shinkle for $5,425. She was built her by Captains Donaldson; Isharn and Fish r in 1883. Since January Ist ther have been seventy-eight steamboat aecidents on the Western and Southern waters, of which forty-five resulted in a total-loss ' of which thirty-seven were by sinking, two by ex plosion and all by fire. One million dol lars would , be a low estimate of the value of the steamboat property alone, without reference to the cargo. Of this loss a large proportion was covered•by insurance, of which again the greater proportion Was held by Cincinnati offices. The Board of Underwrittfrs of Cincinnati are of the opinion that, where bridges are built over the Ohio river, in order to leave the navigation of the river reasonably safe, there should bo a main span over the chan nel not less than five hundred feet long. We clip the following from the. St. Louis Republican of Sunday: :Up to the present date this season twenty-six steamers have started on the voyage to Fort Benton. To , the same date last season" twenty-three boats had started. The season last year was some days later than - this, as, for in stance, last year the first boat left on March 28th, while thili year the first to leave was on the 21st; so that, taking the same num ber of days (28) shows 'a difference of eight boats, in favor of last year, as during that time thirty-nine boats had started. During the same period last year seven boats started for the . lower Forts, while this year but one boat has started as yet. The boats of this season have also had much lighter trips than last year, and at greatly reduced rates. Bids for the transpewtation of army sup plies to Forts Sully. Rice and Stevenson were opened yesterday. Quite a lively cempetition was witnessed, but at dusk no award had been Made. The contest is gen erally conceded to be between Capt. Ben. Johnston and Capt. T. K. Voorhis, Captain. V. offering to carry the freight at' the rate of $1,19 per 100 pounds to Fort Sully, and 81,91 to Rice and Stevenson, with 16c per 100 pounds off for freight taken at points above the city. Captain Johnson offers to carry at $1,25 to Sully, $1,85. to Rice, and $1,75 M Stevenson, , with 25c off; • The Fort Smith (Arkansas) Herald'says: Boat owners in this river have become so , abomnibly stingy that none advertise, and there is no, wonder, that so many of them sink—it: is rather remarkable that, some of them don't blow UP---as the captains are so close that they' ,will hardly let steam enough on to propel the boats.
