—Two sewing girls in St. Louis being in
almost destitute circumstances and despond
ing, attempted to commit suicide the other
day. One of them had already taken poi
son and the other was about to do so, when
a little brother of one of the girls brought in
a policeman, who, with the aid of a physi
cian, put a stop to their designs. Both girls
have .been provided with occupation and
homes and are now comfortable.
—The vile practice of publishing to the
personal concerning liv
ing people has reached its climax in a book
just published in. New York, and purport
ing to be written by a former confidential
servant of ,Mrs. Lincoln, at the White
House. If this woman was really what
she pretends, confidence was never worse
placed nor more ungratefully violated than
in her notable production in book form.
—The English Dean of Arches has de
cided against
_some of . the ritualistic prac
tices of the Rev. Mr. Mackonochie, rector of
St. Alban.s, Holborn. The elevation of the
sacrament, the use of • incense during the
communion service and the mixing ofliater
with the wine are condemned as contrary to
the law - of the English Church. But the
burning of two lighted candles upon the
altar during 'communion service is per
mitted. ,
—Tupper has written some Stanzas on
some bones found at Smithfield, and sup
posed to be those of martyrs who there per
ished at the stake. Aside from the fact that
the English journals pronounce these verses
to he • "ineffable rubbisb," the bones have
been discdvered to be only , those of swine.
An excellent opportunity is here offered for
any contemporary to write something about
"the ghastly and long continued rattling of
dry bones."

of Mr. Whit Worth's :recent offer to endow
thirty acholaishipa for the instruction of
young ,men for the theory and practice of
mechanics, that with the exception of. Mr.
Peabody's inexhaustible bounty it , does not
remeinhor an actof equal munificence. Mr.
Whitworth, -it • may be said, has. endowed
the nation with a fund of $500,000. The
offer has been made to and accepted by the
