RIVER NEWS
Both rivers continue to recede st dily'at
this point with seven feet in the Monon
gmhela, and eight feet in the Allegheny.
The, weather yesterday was mild and
pleasant; and towards evening the sun was
out in full force:.
The Arrivals" since our last include the
New York, from Leuisiille; and Bayard,
from Parkersburg, while the . .departures
were the Julia No. 2. for .Zanesvrne, and
Bayard, for Parkersburg. The Kate Rob
inson; from' Louisville, Argosy, from Cin
cinnati, and .Glenddle, front'.St. Louis, are
among the first boats due.
The Echo No. 2 departed, for Oil City last
evening t 'and 'the Ida Rees is due from
there this morning. The Rees will return
as usual on to-morrow evening.
The teWboat Lion got in yesterday ;with
a large tow of empty barges,• and, we pre
sume, the Fearless got off for Cincinnati,
and, probably-, some others.'
The Grey Eagle, Capt. Brennan, is the
regular packet for Parkersburg today,
leaving promptly at noon.
The I3ellevernon t Capt. J. 'J. Darragh.
will positively leave for St. Louis this
morning, at least, the Captain says so, and
he ought to know. The Mary Davage
Barges, Capt. Hugh' Campbell, are filling
up steadily, and will soon be ready to
sail.
The Alice 'V. Capt...Keyt, is announced to
leave for / St. Louis !this evening without
fail. `She is a big carrier and shippers need
not se apprehensiVe about- her not bbing
able to take all the freight that offers. , i .
The .T.N. - McCullorigh, Capt. George D.
Moore; is the regular packet for Cincinnati
to-morrow, leaving promptly at 5 p. m.
We predict that that the McCullough will
become a favorite in the CinCirmati, as she
was in the Parkersburg trade. .
The Ntnv State, Capt. Jack Harrison, is
i
advertised to leave for New Orleans and n
ermediate points this evening.
The Maggie Hays,_LCapt. B. C. Martin, is
expected to clear for St. Louis and the. U
pper Mississippi to-morrow or next day.
-The Kate. .Putnam passed Lotilsvilleini
Sunday, en route for Pittsburgh, and the
towboat John F. Dravo arrived there from
Pittsburgh the same day.
The IA estmoreland from, New "Orleans,
arrrived at Cairo on-Sunday.
The bridge over the Mississippi, at Bur
lington, is ;;ping ahead rapidly. A few
days will knish the eastern' end of the
bridge up to the draw pier. The trestle=
work for the draw pier will be built ]par
allel With the current, instead of across it,;
as in the other spans, so as not to. interfere
•with passing steamers. The current is very
rapid, sweeping past the piers and pilings
with great force, making it necessary to
build everything—even the ' temporary
structure—very secure and firm to prevent
loss of time and expense: .Oil lights, with
reflecting lenses are kept in position upon
the draw anil two adjoining piers as a guide
for steamers at night--;-and: every precau
tionhas been taken to prevent damage to
the structure or to passing boats either by
floods, currents or high wind.
We clip the following from the St. :LOWS
Dentoerat ofSatutday: Rattssoffreight and
passage are becoming extremely low to all
points below St. Louis and St. Paul. Merry,
of Dubuque. proposes to start towboats and
barges; taking grain in bulk to St. Lents at
.12%c per MO. Passage from St. 'Louis to
Keokuk is only '52,50, and to - Quincy $1,50
by the old line, which is a eg lower than
rates published by the new 'line. Our citi
zens are not uninterested spectators of this
opposition carnival in the Keokuk trade:
At all points hundieds of people await at
the wharves the arrival of the opposition
boats, and they are becoming thoroughly
warmed. The beats leave this port on Tues
days, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays,
an
it :Is.. . fs.. pretty generally known that the
strugglisisto .be persistent. So of the corn
petitioii,of the St. Paul lines. It is becom
ing more interesting as time progresses:"
We shall soon hear of passengers and
freight being carried for almost nothing
between Dubuque .and St. Paul—Commo
