The Vicloburg• Times, of Wednesday, has
the following in relation to the storm at
Vicksburg on Tuesday night. It will be
seen that the first reports as to the damage
to the Lexington were highly exagge
rated:
The terrific storm of last night was prob
ably the most severe we have had for
months. At this hour we are able to fur
nish very meagre particulars of the damrge
sustained throughout, the city, but at the
wharf the steamer Lexington was literally
blown to pieces, The storm culminated
about 8 o'clock in the evening, and carried
the chimneys, forward part of the cabin
and boiler deck overboard with a terrible
crash. Capt. Hamilton, who was _standing
on the roof ,at the time, going over with
the debris, and falling in the river imtne
diately between the steamboat and a coal
barge which was lying alongside. Fortu
nately a rope was hanging over the guard s
grasping which he regained the main deck
and was saved. He was severely scratched
and bruised, but suffered no serious in
jury. .
The Lexington was full of passengers,
-including a largo number of ladies, who
were terribly alarmed, but happily no
casuality, except the accident to Captain
Hamilton, has yet, become known. We
expect to thear , of vety., extensive disasters
all along the river from the effects or 'this
tornado, and shall await the receipt of news
concerning the boats that left port last
night with much anxiety.
A St. Louis telegram; under date of Sat
day, says: The' upper works of 'the G. D.
Palmer were burned off at the wharf, be
tween 12 and , 1 o'clock this morning. A
barge of the Rey City was damaged, and
the Mary. McDonald narrowly escaped.
The Palmer is owned by. Capt. Lanahan,
and valued at/315,000, and insured in Cin
cinnati offices for $lO,OOO. She was form
erly the Nannie Byers. River , falling.
Business brisk. Competition is beeoming
warmer and. rates decreasing. The Galla
tin; from Sioux City for Omaha, sunk on
the 10th, end is total loss. The upper rivers
are falling.
COAL AnntvEin—The'following tows of
coal for this witty arrived -from Pittsburgh
yesterday: - J. S.-Neal, 5 barges, containing
