OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
THURSDAY, April 16, 1868.
In New York the money Inarket has
been very stringent, but is now working a
little easier. The very lowest terms for call
loans upon choice collaterals has been 7
per ceut., but the rate is decreasing, Prime
business paper is discounted at from seven
to ten per cent. but the offerings are still in
excess of the supply. General business in
New York is in an unsettled condition.
The railway share market is losing some
of its excitement. The uncertainty pre
vailing regarding the issue of the Erie leg
islation at Albany has stopped for the pres
ent the movements in Central and Erie.
—The Philadelphia Ledger, of Wednes
day, says: The money market has ruled
much the same yesterday as on the pre
vious day. There is a fair inquiry, but the
demand on call was met at 7 per cent.,with
occasional transactions in large lines at a
slight concession on this rate. Best com
mercial paper rules at 7to 9 per cent. dis
count, and though there is demand • for all
the money that is offering at ,these rates,
there is no urgency. At New York the
money market is quoted active, and while
this is the case at a point so near, there is
not likely to be any material relaxation
from present rates in this market. The
Philadelphia banks are inan'easy condition
and able and willing To accommodate their
customers to nearly or quite the amounts
desired. This freedom on the part of the
banks lightens the pressure on the street
very materially.
—The Chicago Tribune, of Wednesday,
reports the money market in that city as
. follows
ra
Most ofhe banks--partioularlythose en
gaged in the produce trade—reported an
active temporary demand for . money to
day, to bridge over until Thursday, in con
sequence of the large deliveries of proper
ty on seller's option for the first half of , the
month. The grain shippers were again
very busy; some eighteen vessels were
chartered—all under the "old bill"—and
the demand for money from this source
was quite active. A large number of time
bills are being drawn against these ship
ments, and this tends to make the market
cloter--and more so than ordinary, as there
is no . lot up to the stringency which has
characterized Wall street for the last three
or four weeks. I"

GETICE OF THE: PITTSBURiaIi GAZETTE,
. THURSDAY, April 16, 1868.
CATTLE. •
The cattle market at these yards has
again been very dull during the past week,
the transactions in the aggregate, being
very light. There has not, so far as we
could loam, been a single eastern buyer in
attendance, and indeed, there were but
very few here from any place; and it Is
equally true that there are but very few
cattle offering, the great proportion being
through shipments to Philadelphia and
New York. Scott it Martin had a small
drove of good Ohio steers (from Pickaway
county) on sale, but there, was no one here
even to look at them, and as a consequence,
(
they, too, were shipped East, alt hough sent
to this market - to be sold. There is some
little inquiry for stock cattle, but stocit
growers in this part of the country are scaro
13r willing to pay what this class of stock
costs in the west,. and as a consequence,
there is little or nothing( doing even in
stockers. It is not likely that there will
be any improvement here until the middle
of May or first of June, about which time
grass cattle will commence ,to be ship
ped its, and even then, we do not expect to
see that life and activity in the • trade with
which it is usually characterized at thlit
season of the . year„ as cattle are scarce and
holders, as a general thing, can hold them
over until fall, provided_ they cannot get
what they think they ought to have.

some time previous, and as a consequence,,
the market'. was: not as spirited Gait was
last _week, although good fat Sheep still
commandvery fair prices. Compared. With
ktit week, however, prices are off from y i ,
to X a cent per pound; there was but nAin T
gle, sale effected at Bc, • and- we doubt
whether the same bunch of Sheep would
have brought .that figure to-day; as will
be seen by refeience to the repert.of sales,
prices ranged all the way from 4x to 8 cts,
the inside figure being for. a bunch of very
inferior clipped, while the outside was for
'a very fine drove of fat wooled Sheep. The
difference made between clipped and wool
ed Sheep ranges from one to two cents per
lb, as to quality and condition.
