RIVER NEWS.
Both• rivers are again receding at this
point, with eleven feet in the Monongahela,
and eleven feet four inches in the Alio
glieny. Yesterday was the warmest day
wa have had this spring, the thertnemetei
at noon being 76 degrees above zero . : A
high wind prevailed nearly all 'day and in
the afternoon we had several nice shOwers
of rain.. •
Telegrams Jinni the headwaters of the
Allegheny report as follows At ,011 City _
the river is-five feet and falling very slow-,

inches and rising. ,* - • -
Therd"hits been no arrivals from below
since our last report, nal& from the rem
lar packets. The Lorena, from St.. Lome,
is d.ue to•day; anti the St; Uharles, from
Cincinnati, may be expected , in this even
fihe Argosy, for St. Louis,- and Grey Ea
gle, for Parkersburg, 'constitute the depar

The., Echo, Capt. Gordon, is the regular
packet for Oil City to-day, leaving prompt
ly at'4p.
The to*boSi Tom Farrow cleared for .
Louisville yesterday with a tow of coal.
There are quite a number of 'towboats in,
port, and they will leave as soon as they
can get tows. `
Messrs. •Ghrlest k Haidett, agent for the
St.'Charles will receive freight for that boat
to-day at the foot of Wood street. .
The Bellevernon, Capt. J. J. Darragh Jr„
is filling up steadily for St. Louls,•and will
soon be ready to take , her departure. She
is an excellent boat in all respects, and of
fers superior accommodations to passen
gers.
The Maggie Hays, - Capt. B. C. Martin,
with Mr. 3", C. Dravo in the office, will' be
the first boat out for the Upper Mississippi.
The Mary Davage and hOrges are loading
for St. Louis.
The Importer, Capt. Williams, tknd the
Silver Lake, Capt. Todd, both first-rate
boats, are filling up steadily for the moun
tains. The Importer is announced to leave
this evening.
The J. N. McCullough, Capt. George D.
Moore, is the regular packet for Parkers
burg, leaving promptly at noon.
The R. C. Gray, Capt. W. B. Anderson,
will be the first boat out for Cincinnati and
Louisville. - The Grey ., •will receipt freight
through to Memphis and New Orleans.
We take the following items from our
Cincinnati exchanges of Tuesday: The U.
S. Marshal sold yesterday morning -the
steamer Leonora for. $5lOO. Captain James
Wise, of The Nashville Packet Co., was the
purchaser. '
•
A family,consisting of fourteen' persons,
from somewhere on the Big Sandy River,
bound'for the far West, have adopted.a
rather primative mode of emigrating. They
traded some land for two flatboats loaded
with bark, with which they arrived here
yesterday. They propose to soli, the bark
and flat boats here, and proceed on their
way by such means as their ideas of ecoa
omy and of the comforts of travel may sug
gest.
The St. Charles had a fair freight, but a
slim passenger trip up , last evening..
A letter from Capt. T. C, Sweeny indi
cates that the St. Marys will be placed in
the Cincinnati - and Pittsburgh trade,to
leave here every Saturday at noon. rhis
is the Argosy's day, and if choosen, would
make lively times, but no money for either.
The Memphis Bulletin, of the 11th, says:
The Belle Lee'arrived here on one wheel.
Her time from New Orleans was two days
and twenty-one hours. She is no match in
.point of speed for the Ruth, Dexter, or
Great Republic, to say nothing of the R. E.
Lee, by which she was so handsomely
flexed to Vicksburg. Little was to be
learned from the officers of the Belle Lee
with regard to her run, they pretending
that she had been making no unusual effort
as regards speed, but.this is generally the
ea.se where a defeat has been sustained.
A St. Lonistelegram, under date of Mon
day, says : Business exhibits 'much activl
ty, which promises to continuethrough the
season, unless limited by low water.
The Rate Putnam and Armenia are an
nounced to-day. The Shamrock has arri

already this season for Fort, , Benton,, and
one for Fort Berthold, on the Upper: .Ms;

the Missouri - will shortly take the same
route. The Missouri is stationary at Oma

- The St. Louis /?epubtlean pokes the fol
lowina at the Louisville Courier: The
"Richmond-Belle Lee-Pargord"' 'Courier,
of Louisville, has but little to say in regard
to the Belle Lee in the late "brush" with
the "Champion," and now falls back; with
its usual inimitable grace, and says that
the Belle Leeds doing remarkably well for
a regular huffiness trip. How • are you,
buainess trips? The Richmond started
out last sring on abusiness (!) trip and'met
the Ruth, and now the Belle

"Champion." We "rather reckon"i that
Capt. McGill will now take some'other day
on which to leave New Orleans, and let the
"Champion" keep-Tuesday.
