E. LETTER FROM TENNESSEE. Friendly Advice from a Former Resident . r of Pittsburgh. We 'have received the following letter - from - Mr.. The Writer is a gentleman of • plot and'-truth: • °AK HiLiAmirminir, TENN., } April Bth, 1868. 3lEag s • Enrrons . GAZETTE :—Having • been longiccuetomed . to Peruse your valu 'Able weeldY, from the earliest period of my recollection, and inasmuch as it received my parental' tronage since the time of its primeval foundation, some eighty-three years ago, -and being somewhat isolated .from the home. of. childhbocl, I herewith :send inclosed one year's:subscription for ' your valuable paper, which you will be kind : enough to send to Tullahonia, Coffee county, • Tennessee. ' ' A two years' residence as - a citizen and , farmer in this genial clime,' solitary and alone among those_ who were once in war my mortal enemies, has certainly given me • a good cluince for observation and experi ence • The longer .1 remain the more often do I ask myself; how is it possible that so many • farmers, particularly of ,my native State, (Pennsylvania,) can remain' at home, in many of those sterile regions,'when such - vast fields,'So rich In nature's bounty, stand invitingly open before them. Did they best know the need there is for them, and the certain remuneration that would reward ._their privation, it appears to me there would be an emigration South such as has never been witnessed on this continent. I would drop a word in ra , rence to an error, which prevails to some extent in the minds of many of our Northern friends as regards their perional safety. I came to Tennessee shortly after the surrender; I have been known as a firm. Republican, or, as this more familiarly termed, Radical; I have witnessed all the storms of passion, when, from the encouragement of the Presidential Incumbent and, his Mends, the South was 'receiving aid and comfort, and secession was again blazing up with fearflil vier, and when my ears were assailed with vitu peration against our Legislators that made ' my blood tingle. Yet in allthisllaye never - been subjected to'-.insult or personal indig nity. In till my intercourse I have been treated with as much courtesy; and found men as hondleble, as was ever my experi 'mice in Pennsylvania my native State. • -,l!d family have Wen accorded as many acts y kindriess, and our neighbors are as _generous as were those :with whom we were associated ita ether days: Our children have associated-in iheirechools' and we have met in their churches, and only by, thinking of fhe Past could we realize that' we were among those who had' ever been otherwise than. our friends. The late enactments of . Congress have produced an element that *Meyer- hold in subjection the fiery zeal of the secessionist. None but those who Attie. weathered the storra•could believe how rapidly llfisprejudice is disappearing. All that we at present need is enterprise, ener gy and skill. Young Lynch, however, was not IM MFM so fortunate. He wandered about in the wood till late at night, when he lost all hope of finding his way out of the forest; and laid down beside a log and slept till the morn ing. Being refreshed by his sleep, he again went forth with more buoyant hopes to find his way home. Bait he was again doomed to disappointment, and after strolling through the wood all day (Thursday), was again compelled to make hie, bed upon the cold ground with no cover but the blue sky. He tiad, but just laid himself down when an unexpected but welcome visitor arrived to share his bed and keep Min company. This strange visitor was a large Newfoundland dog, which staid with the •little fellow till Friday morning. A short time after daybreak the dog showed signs of great anxiety and uneasi ness, and started to leave young Lynch, but he had - enough foresight -to follow the dog, and was conducted by the faithful animal to the road, where he saw a man upon a wagon. He hailed the man, and,'after tell ing his adventure, was put into the'wagon and brought to his home. The joy of the parents upon his return can be better imag ined than described. After searching for their boy in every imaginable place where it ' was thought he could be, Without avail, they had about given up all hopes of finding him, and there is a probability if it had not been for that faithful Newfoundland dog the child would have starved to death or died 'of grief in the lonesome forest. During the two days and nights that he was lost he was without a mouthful .to eat, and his counte nance showed plainly that he had indulged extensively in tears. - - A boil is generally very small at first, and a fellow hardly notices it. but in a few days it gets to be the biggest of the 'two, and the chap that has it is ofvery little com parison with his boil, which 'then "has him." Boils appear mysteriously' upon various portions of the human body, com ing when and where they please, and often in very inconvenient place. 4. Sometimes a solitary boil is. the sum total of the afflic tion, but frequently there is s."rubishin' lot of 'em" to help the first one. If a boil comes anywh, ere on a person, that per son always wishes it had come some where else, although it would puzzle him to say just where. goodlf a chap has a boil, he generally gets a deal of sympathy from others—"in a horn." Whoever asks him what ails him, laughs at him fbr his pains to answer, while many unfeeling persons make game of him, or of his misfortune, or boil. It is very wicked to make sport of persons with boils; they cannot- help it, and often feel very bad about it. Physicians don't give boil patients much satisfaction, as a general thing, although - young physicians who, are just beginning -to practice, are fond of trying their lancets on them. Boils are said to, be healthy, and judging from the way they take hold, and hang on, and ache, and raise Cain generally, there is no doubt that they are healthy, and have good constitutions. They are renerally very lively and playful at night, and it is very funny to see a man with a good large one, prospecting around his couch for a place where his boil will fit in "with out hurtin." Boils tend to purify the blood, strength en the stem, calm the nerves, restrain profanity, tranquilize' the' spirits, impreve the temper and beautify the appearance. They are good things for married men who spend their evenings away from home, as they ,give them an opportunity to rest their night-keys and get acquainted with their families. It is stated that boils save the patient a fit of sickness, but if- the sickness isnot the best thing to have, it must be an all-fired mean thing. It is also said that a person is better after having got rid of them. Mau,y distinguished per sons have enjoyed. these harbingers of health. Job took the first premium at the County Fair for luivin more sellers under ctdtivathla t1i313 her perso n . Shalt*. *are had them, an meant bolls when he said, "One woo doth tread upon another's heels, so fast they follow." , There are a great many remedies for boils, most of which are well worth try ing, bemuse if they don't do any good, they don't hurt the boils. If a chap goes down street with a boil, every man he meets will tell him of a good thing for it, .among which are—Shoemakers' whacks,. Mrs. Winslow's Syrup, Trix, Spaulding's Glue, Charlotte Busse, Gum Drops, Water- Proof Blacking, Night Blooming Cereus, Chloroform, Kissengen, ecc., rte.
