—The Chicago Evening Journa/ says: The
leading banks report the money market
close and firm, and private advises from
New York mention the existence of a shri
ller state of affairs there. Currency is in
active request for the movement of grain,
and owing to the lightness at the east ship
pers are, in many instances, compelled to
draw time bills against cargoes now loaded
—a condition of things in the present state
of the discount market not at all satisfac
tory to those banks which have to.do the
`carrying." Rates of interest are un,
changed.
—The Philadelphia Ledger, of Mbnday,
`says: There is.thought to be a little soften
ing in the money market, but the change
in rates thus far since quarter-day are not
very marked. Call loans as the rule are
quoted at 8 per cent., with an occasional
transaction something lower. Commercial
paper is quoted at 7 to 9 per cent. for first
class. The good banking houses on the
street are not paying above 5 to 6 per cent.
for money left on- deposit. The bankers
are acconunodating. their customers to
pretty near the amount of the demand
upon them, but only on good legitimate
bills.
—From the New York Tribune, of Mon
day: Money opened quite active, and'early
in the day there was considerable inquiry,
but before one o'clock there was an abun- -
dant supply of capital offering at 7 per
cent., and borrowers at that rate than they
could use. The bank statement shows a
continued contraction, but the reserve is
fully maintained. The next "statement.
will probably show that the currency Is
returning to the Atlantic cities freely, and
in amounts which will secure an easy
money market at and belew the legal
rate.
PITTSBURGH PETROLEUM MARKET.
OFIPCE OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
TUESDAY, April 14, 1868. 5
CRUDE-The crude market was rather
quiet to-day, which was owing mainly to
to the fact`that the great majority of. the
dealers have either gone, or are making
preparations to attend the famous O'Connor
and Tack suit in Philadelphia, .having been
suppoinaed to attend 'as witnesses. We
have but two sales to record: 2500 barrels
on spot, at 8,9-16, and 1200 bbls at filicy'and •
200 Smith's Ferry, at 834 c; these were the
only transactions reported, - and as will be
seen, while the market is'quiet, priced are
without quotable change.
REFINED—Not a single sale reported,:
and while the market is quiet and ne
glected, for the reason abbve referred to,
prices are lunchanged. We continue to
