previous prices. Wheat, quiet and un
changed. Corn is in good demand and
prices higher; ear, 88c.; shelled 00c. Oats,
in active demand, and prices advanced to
75 for. No. 1. Rye, 51,83 and barley, 82,85
and the market for both is stead'-.' Cotton
is held' higher and the market unsettled,
there is no speculative demand and opera
tors seeming Unwilling to invest the:cur
rent rate. Middling could not 'have been
bought below 27c. at the close, and the same
parties' asked 27 1-2 c. Tobacco is in de
mand at 101 l prices; sales, 114 hhds. Mess
pork is irregular, it is generally held at *26;
but no buyers at over *25,5e; the specu
lative demand yesterday has fallen
off. Bulk meats are held at 11a13
3-4a15 and 45 1-2 c, but there was not much
demand nor was there much offered;

The river appeared to be stationary last
evening with six feet two or three inches
in the channel by the Monongahela marks.
An Oil City telegram reported the Alle
gheny-stationary at that point with thirty
four inches in the channel The weather
yesterdiy was clear and pleasant, and all
that could possibly be desired for the
transaction of out-door business. '
The Robt. Moore, from Portsmouth; Jas.
-Rees, from. Wheeling, And Kate Robinson,
from Louisville, constitute the arrivals,
and the Moore, Rees and St. Charles were
the only departures. The St. Charles did
not have as good - a trip as she did last
week, though she got considerable freight,
nevertheless. It would appear that pas
sengers, as a general thing, prefer 'going
through by rail. • ' '

The Armenia left for St. Louis yesterday
afternoon, and the Molnotto loft for the
same Point last evening. The Melnotte

We had the pleasure of . meeting Capt. De
Haven on West street this morning. The
contract for building Capt.. De Haven's
mammoth steamer Alpha, has been award
ed by the Board of Directors at New. Or
leans to the Madison builders. James S.
Garnett, for many, years connected with the
mail heists and packets, and - recently a resi
dent of this of this city, died of consump

The Evansville Journal,of Tuesday, says:
The Quickstep and Mollie Norton made a
dash against time last evening. Going up
nearly, to the mouth of the'bayou, she came
down under a full head of steam,ipassing
.the point, the Quickstep in nine minutes
and thirty seconds, and the Norton on five
minutes and thirty-eight seconds. The
Norton took a little wider, .swing than the
Quickstep, to clear the Pine Grove, which
was coming up, and demanded the star

dred on sacked grain, and $1 per barrel for
flour; would be made from this point to New
Orleans.

Wednesday, says. Last night a negro, - on
the Sam Hale, detected in an •attempt to
steatabox of tobacco, was - tied down to the
deck of the Darling. The negroes on the
levee heard of it, and went aboard,,deman
, ding his' release. The watchman, named.
Taylor , struck the leader, named Johneon,
on head with a hatchetyounding hint
