APRIL 3, 1868. - - Tharlver seemed to be. at stand last, evening with scant six and a half„ feet, in the channel by the Monongahela marks.. Oil City telegrams reported the Allegheny rising yesterday with thirtiy-kme and a half inches in channel, and snowing. Here, the weather was quite cold , and cloudy last evening—in the morning we had consider able ruin, and it rained some during Wed nesdarnight, The %Armadiilo arrived on Wednesday evening, and since then, the J. N. McCul lough;• from Parkersburg, St: Charles, from Cincinnati; and Robt. Moore, from Ports mouth. The McCullough was a little be hind time, but: he cleared' again last night. The St: Charles brought up a good trip, and / will return again this evening. _The Maggie Hays, from St. Louis, and Kate Robinson,.from Cincinnati, are among 'the first boats duo—they may possibly be found in port this morng. The Argosy got off for Cincinnati last evening, and the New State had steam up, preparatory to taking her departure for the same point. , The Ida. Rees cleared foi 011 City, and the Echo is clue from there to-day, nnd will return as usual on Satur- Daniel Eckert, pilot of the towboat Lioness, while engaged iat the wheel' as the boat was backing from shore near New Cumberland Wednesday , morning; lost his. hold of the wheel and ,fell, when one of his legs was caught between the . spokes and broken just above the ankle. The injured man Vas .placed on board the Leonidas, upward bound, which' conveyed him to his place of residence, Phillipsburg, opposite Rochester. The commodious and palatial St. Charles, Capt. C. A. Dravo, with Andy Robinson, Jr. in the office, I's the regular , packet for Cincinnati . to-day, leaving at noon. Here is an opportunity presented for any ono in tending 'to visit the Queen City, or any point between here and there, that should be taken advantage of, as the St. Charles is in all respects, one of the Most commodious staunch and iinift es t steamers on the West, em Rivers. Shippers .should extend all the support they can to Capt. Dravo, and thus encourage and enable him to keep her in the trade. Capt. Robinson will be found in the office, ready to wait on those having business with the boat, and he knows, as well "its any other man ' " how to do it. The Glasgow,Capt. Geo. Johnston, will be the first out for the Upper Ms: s i ssippi, and passengers and shippers should bear this in mind. The Armadillo, Captain D. L. Hendrickson, with Captain D. A. Swaney in the office, is announced for St: Louis and Missouri river. The Inaporter,Captain John A. Williams, of the "Rees Line," will be the first boat out for Fort Benton. She will be followed by the Ida Reese, Capt. Albert, and Silver Lake, Capt-Todd, of the same line. The Melnotte did not get off for St. Louis as expected last evening, but she will posi tively leave to-day, and passengers and shippers should bearthis in mind. The Bayard, in charge of Capt. Asa Shep ard, will soon be ready to take the place in Pittsburgh and Parkersburg line made va cant by the withdrawal of the f.eni Leoti. A St.. Louis telegram, under date of Tuesday, says: The New Orleans steamers of the Atlantic line and outsiders have per fected arrangements to load at the Atlantic line's wherfboat. The object is to avert competition. It is not believed the arrange ments will continue long, as all the out siders have not joined. The Pauline Car roll leases to-day, and the Republic on - Thursday, under the new arrangement. = The-levee crowded with boats. Some can not reach the bankwithout waiting and powerful squeezing. Freight and passen gers are abundant for the Mississippi. The Missouri boats aro getting excellent down trips. Some of the recent departed mountain boats had quite large freights. The Rountz lino is receiving large quan tities of Government freight. The Carrie left on Saturday with 200 tuns, and the Peninah leaves on Wednesday with all sho wants. Governor Fletcher has approved the bill, passed by the Legislature, which exempts steamboats plying to and from St. Louis from all city and county taxes. The Louisville Courier says: The citi zens of Louisville will be called upon on Saturday next to vote upon an ordinance to purchase of the heirs of John Brown, Sr., deceased,an individual fourth in and to the wharf between Second and Ninth streets; also, of the same heirs, fifty-two and a half feet of wharf property at Portland; for all of which the city is to issue her bonds, amounting to $175,000, payabls in thirty years, bearing interest. The per cent. The same ordinance provides for the pur chase of 1,997 feet of wharf property, lying between Brook and Clay streets, at a cost of $l6O to $225 per foot. It also provides for the purchase of 811 feet of ground by 100 feet deep, fronting On Water street, and lying between Fourth and Sixth streets, at a cost of #lOO to #250 per foot. For the last two sections of prop erty, amounting to $163,900, the city is to issue her bonds -at five, ten, fifteen and twenty years, bearing six per cent. In, Wrest. e • The grand total of this wharf purchase, if our figures and estimates are correct, and we believe they are, is $639,602. We clip the following from the Cincin nati .E'nquivr: Captain Sam. Houston, of the Peerless, telegraphs from. Little Rock to Clawson &Morse, of this city, that, the little steamer Hesper was sunk in the Ar kansas river, two hundred miles above that point, in eight feel of -water. She was owned by the aboVe named parties ' who built her here in the fall of 1868, ata cost of $l9OOO, She is insured in companies of this city for $9,000. The dispatch states the boat is nearly broke in two, and can scarce ly be raised. , late New Orleans paper remarlm, A paragraph is going the rounds of the West era papers, that sugar in boxes is imported from Havana through our city and deliver ed la Chicago at $l, - 60 per box. This is an error. The freight from Havana to NewDr- leans is $1,50 per box. Of course sugar can be delivered in Chicago via New Orleans at i twenty to twenty-five per cent. less than via New York. All descriptions of groce ries—augars, eoffee, molasses itte.--can be deliveredin any of the Northwestern States through our city at-twenty to thirty per cent.' less than by the way of Newt York. We.believe salt has been , carried from hap to. Louis for fifty cents per sack. We are not positive.
